The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently clarified that a £160 million reduction in projected in-year expenditure for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) and Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) is not a reflection of scaling back military capability or commitment to the programme.
Responding to parliamentary queries from Conservative MP James Cartlidge, Defence Minister Maria Eagle explained that the underspend results from various factors, including shifts in accounting treatment and early progress on the combat aircraft demonstrator project.
“The reduced in year expenditure is not a result of changes to the military capability being developed by the FCAS/GCAP programme,” Eagle stated. “It is a combination of an accounting treatment change, work on the combat aircraft demonstrator project that was carried out ahead of schedule in the previous financial year and revised plans for the delivery of infrastructure and other programme enablers.” |

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed a £1.3 billion allocation for the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme in the current financial year, answering a series of questions from Conservative MP James Cartlidge.
In response to a question about whether the £1.3 billion represents the full expected allocation for the FCAS and GCAP this financial year, Defence Minister Luke Pollard clarified that the £1.3 billion of government funding was planned in the previous financial year.
He added:
“The £1.3 billion figure provided on 19 September 2024 accounts for the Government funding for Future Combat Air System/Global Combat Air Programme in the current financial year.”
Cartlidge also asked how much of the £1.3 billion had been planned in previous financial years to be spent this year. Pollard responded that all the funding had been anticipated, stating:
“All of the £1.3 billion of spend this financial year was planned in the last financial year.” |
The UK Government has reinforced its commitment to the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP), a multinational effort aimed at developing a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet in collaboration with Japan and Italy.
Despite concerns that the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) might delay or deprioritise the programme, Defence Minister Luke Pollard has confirmed that significant progress continues. |
BAE Systems has received a $184 million contract modification to produce an additional 48 Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles (AMPV) for the U.S. Army. The order is in addition to the existing full-rate production contract.
The AMPV family of vehicles (FoV) replaces the Army's legacy M113s and modernizes the force by providing critical survivability, mobility, on-board power and interoperability upgrades to the Armored Brigade Combat Team. The FoV is currently built in five variants including the General Purpose, Mortar Carrier, Medical Evacuation, Medical Treatment, and Mission Command vehicles. |
Who knows. Germany have moved a step closer to allowing the sale of the EF to Turkiye. |

Yeah like watching paint dry. Mind you, I would be a very nervous ship builder if they just slid it in like some of the container ship launchs. |
Wad, re 5649. It just takes all the fun out of the process! |

"Despite its improving financial performance, the company’s rising share price means it now trades on a relatively lofty price-to-earnings ratio of 20.8. Its bottom line, though, is expected to rise by around 11pc per annum over the next two financial years. This helps to justify its rich market valuation and suggests that further capital growth lies ahead.
Unfortunately, BAE has not been a member of Questor’s wealth preserver portfolio until now. We have excess cash available following recent sales, which will be partly used to fund the stock’s inclusion in our portfolio.
Although the company’s share price has risen significantly since our initial tip, its solid financial position, vastly improved operating outlook and sound strategy mean it continues to merit purchase on a long-term view.

Launching a sub is clearly not as exciting as launching a new boat; a gentle lowering without a splash. Won't create much of a dockside crowd! |
Agamemnon, the latest Royal Navy Astute Class attack submarine has been launched at BAE Systems in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Named after the ancient Greek king, Agamemnon is the sixth of seven Astute Class submarines, all of which have been designed and built at the Company's historic Barrow shipyard – home of UK submarine building. The nuclear-powered boat, which weighs in at 7,400 tonnes and is 97 metres long, rolled out of the Devonshire Dock Hall and entered the water for the first time today. Agamemnon will now begin the next phase of its test and commissioning programme, before leaving Barrow for sea trials with the Royal Navy. |
sadly this will go to £14 and beyond now. |

Blippy3 is obviously a bit too stupid to understand what Lammy said:
“I speak not only as a Briton, as a Londoner, and as a foreign secretary.
“I stand here also as a black man whose ancestors were taken in chains from Africa, at the barrel of a gun to be enslaved, whose ancestors rose up and fought in a great rebellion of the enslaved.
“Imperialism. I know it when I see it. And I will call it out for what it is.”
I can only imagine that the greatest speech blippy3 has ever made is "salt and vinegar?". |
