e.g SKG

Cash from Operating Activities 1.45B
Cash from Investing Activities -967M
Cash from Financing Activities -496M

1) So, they made 1.45b of which they invested 967m and paid back 496m debt.

2) Or, of the 1.45b, 967m was from the business and 496m from financing.

(2) doesn't sound right to me.

If cash FROM financing is negative then its paying back debt.
If cash FROM investing is +ve it means you sold some assets, if -ve you bought (i.e inveested in) some.

In the statement of cash flows ... either it could be cash inflows or cash outflows... so negative number could be an outflow

A simpler question.
In the financials for cash flow, does a negative number for financing means they paid debt off ?

A few weeks ago I emailed AVs Investor Relations for further detail on the calculation of Contractural Service Margin under IFRS17

Below is ther answer (yes they did!!)
Perhaps one of our insurance technical Gurus could take a look and let us know if this is of any significance

My Question

>>I am a Private Shareholder in Aviva
>>I should be most grateful if you could answer, or arrange to be answered, a >>question on the new IFRS accounting

>>I understand that the 'Contractural Service Margin' is arrived at using >>discounted revenue flows.
>>I would like to ask; what discount rate is being used for this calculation and >>does/will this vary from year to year with changes in the rate of inflation

Answer

The discount rates used for the CSM vary by the type of business and when the business is written. These discount rates are “locked-inR21; and then used to calculate the interest accretion each period and to value any changes in the CSM from assumption changes and experience variances. The discount rates are set as an illiquidity premium plus the risk free curve.

We do not publish the locked-in rates, however you can calculate the average 1-year rate for each area of business by dividing the interest accretion by the opening value of CSM, given in section 6.i of the HY report.

Quarter to one in the morning one can be forgiven for being a bit obtuse

You own shares
You are given a dividend (all being well)
Do not buy shares with the dividend
Keep it in your account in cash(high interest paying accounts abound at moment)

Hope that makes it easy to understand

Has been a very slow market

Enjoy the weekend

The chart's not exactly confidence inspiring at the moment.

Glad I bought GACA and AV.A prefs instead of the ordinaries now, but it's very tempting here now.

If the next divi is 22p, then 377/22p = 5.8% return. This should be attractive enough to draw in more buyers in the coming weeks

It is always very disappointing to lose a senior member of the Executive Team
One crumb of solace is that young Winslow obviously does not expect AB to step down any time soon. Thus his chances of the CEO position were a long way off

"NHS backlogs are driving a surge in people taking out health insurance, with 7.4m having private cover, up from 6.8m in 2015. A record 7.6m patients in England were waiting for treatment in June, with 2 in 5 waiting more than 18 weeks, according to the NHS. The £6.2bn private health industry is reaping the benefit with medical insurers such as Aviva gaining 170,000 from last year."

Shorting Lloyds seems a bit dum to me. Obviously trying to take advantage of the end of buyback. Would have been more sensible at 50p rather than 42p. Also - we are near end of interest rate rises, so can only really see a rally in ‘FinancialR17; shares. But what do I know. Chap in photo looks far richer than me !!!

Don’t hold Lloyds (have in past), but hold av and Lgen.
