02/5/2022 08:52 | Careful has been registered on ADVFN since 2001 so I very much doubt it. Any road up, let's try and keep this thread on point as although the war (terrible as it is) obviously has an impact on AV, it's not the be all and end all.spud | spud
01/5/2022 23:00 | Yay, let's put our faith in him, it's over!!He said he would never invade, he doesn't target civilians and he won't use illegal weapons/ have his troops rewarded for child rape... he's totally trustworthy now. Careful is standing the whole of the world down!Folks, make your own minds up, but I think we have a Russian troll on here. Who'd have thought!!!!Stay safe, the troll war started today as briefed by the MOD and security services. | klotzak
01/5/2022 22:46 | Good to see that the steelworks is started being evacuated safely under the guidance of the Red Cross. This whole business could be resolved with a sensible solution. Ukraine could do well out of it with financial aid. Russia seems to have dropped its regime change demand, so if they tidy up the Crimea and contested regions, get a no NATO agreement, a solution is within reach. Ukraine will be able to join the EU it seems. This could be over within a few months and we shall not even think about it afterwards. Hopefully Ukraine will not be left in the mess that Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria and Libya are in. | careful
01/5/2022 22:06 | Putin has already sown the seeds with his population that direct conflict with NATO is almost a certainty. Newsweek touches it with an article. The moment he crosses the line his S400 systems will be inoperative. | klotzak
01/5/2022 21:43 | Iraq 2 was founded on a lie. But we are able in the West to discuss it. We do not get arrested for just holding up a placard saying "no war" However Iraq2 only happened because of the failure of Iraq 1 and that was a response to Saddam's invasion. We have criticised Vietnam There are repressed people in Afghanistan which voters would have freed even today. Syria was about fighting the clear and present danger of ISIS. The Ukraine wants to join the EU and NATO - but has not done so and was no threat to Putin, He says they have no right to be independent. Go back far enough in history and the Kiev was the seat of power not Moscow or anywhere near. There are Russian supporters in the Ukraine , but thanks to the famine and genocide instigated by Russia and repopulation of Russians. But we are in a modern era , invasion within Europe is not acceptable. If Putin gets his way and makes Ukraine Russian then by definition HE creates NATO on Russia's border , what does he do then invade again ? Wars are fought for self interest - but this war has been started by Putin's self interest we cannot just stand by , so we send weapons and let the Ukraine defend itself. | fenners66
01/5/2022 21:40 | Fenners, I'd just ignore them. The whole message antagonises with 'if you had half a brain' etc. There's no reasoned argument, just nonsense. | klotzak
01/5/2022 20:10 | fenner The war is tragic, but no more so than Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Syria, Libya. In fact to date causalities are lighter, but that will change if it turns into a full grown NATO proxy war. The question is 'are Russias reasons for invading Ukraine more justified than the other foreign invasions of recent years'? | careful
01/5/2022 20:01 | I see this as a war in part, for critical minerals and commodities. I am British and not pro Putin China India. Strategically America was right to try to use their soft power to control the Ukraine. Companies as Intel get 50% of their supply of critical elements from the Ukraine. Lithium and other green materials will be under the control of Russia China. A very important prize, even the grain/food assets of Ukraine is critical. We have been outflanked by China, and in trying to retrieve the situation we are up against a commodity superpower in the Russia China India combination. For decades we in the wealthy West have relied upon cheap and plentiful commodities obtained from countries that are poor. | careful
01/5/2022 18:39 | Careful you accuse Ukraine of being corrupt - so that's an excuse in your eyes for destroying a whole country killing thousands , dragging thousands of to concentration camps and murdering anyone they feel like ? In response we should let him get on with it? Look around your home town , imagine even that with every building wrecked , how much would that cost to rebuild? Now multiply that by thousands . Whatever you are brainwashed into believing in terms of casualties - 3000!!- you cannot argue with the real destruction. As far as the true level of civilian casualties so far - I imagine when they work out who is missing , it will be tens of thousands already. | fenners66
01/5/2022 18:10 | By exactly what we're doing. If he puts a jet over NATO soil, or a boot.... We fight. He's not stupid, he knows he cannot win conventionally, and he won't get away with a nuclear fight, so keep reassuring him that the border is no-go. The problem now is he has a ticking clock to 'sort' Finland and Sweden, who will both assist in giving him a dose of western humiliation. Those countrified are no doubt full of advisors now. | klotzak
01/5/2022 16:17 | It would be stupid to try to stop Russia flying over Ukraine which it considers to be in the `Russian area of influence. If Russia was to demand a no fly zone over Iraq in either war what would we have done? This will get serious now as Putin seems to losing control of his embarrassed military leaders. Maybe a shambles to start with, but they are getting into their stride but be fearful if they do start losing. If they face defeat they could resort to nuclear and other weapons. | careful
01/5/2022 15:23 | buzz24...agree with your take...I wanted the free West to activate a no fly zone over Ukraine at the outset and in my opinion that would have given Putin food for thought or at least held things in check. Tobias Ellwood Conservative MP advocated this approach and I had an exchange of emails with him in support. I like Tobias and Bob Seely MP for the Isle of Wight, and a few others who appear to have a better grasp over how to address the aggression from Russia over the past weeks. I am personally not impressed with Truss and Wallace and worried how matters will unfold. Putin must be defeated and the City of Odesa needs to be defended at all costs. I am a person of peace and laid some white tulips on the Statue pf the founder of Ukraine near Holland Park on 24/2 at 9.30am. Sorry to be off focus an AV. but sincerely hope that something positive will happen and surprise us on the Ukraine front to the good of all parties, and yes for Russia's sake in the longer term. Putin's behaviour and domestic support is outrageous in these difficult times, and difficult to comprehend. | cyberian
01/5/2022 14:30 | Buzz, the simple reason why the sky wasn't/ isn't protected is the S400 system. To neuter that you would need to attack radars and launchers in Russia and Belarus. | klotzak
01/5/2022 13:53 | Sorry no overseas postings as just aged about 17 in summer camp in the UK as an air cadet but there were some great aircraft around at the time...Everyone accepted it was the cold war but could always escalate...I'm more bothered we have military chiefs who seemed to refuse to take the maniacs on in this world and being frightened by Putin when all we needed to say at the beginning is we will police the skies to keep the peace in Ukraine and that is all...It was then up to him what he did then, not us... | buzz24
30/4/2022 23:59 | Oh Buzz, you absolute hero!! Which Sqn were you on in Germany, Laarbruch or Bruggen, and which of the two seats did you sit in?You will be no stranger to operating out of a HAS, but for how long? 1980s we're a doddle compared to today. | klotzak
30/4/2022 23:47 | Buzz, as far as I can remember the Cold War was never in danger of going hot. Cuba, maybe, but that was very different, and the lack of SSBNs off the States was a clue it was never going to be the end. Nowadays, nothing needs to leave port to pose a risk. You don’t seem to be able to differentiate, please don’t tell me you invest without DYOR? | rongetsrich
30/4/2022 23:25 | Unchartered territory? Have you heard of the cold war that lasted decades and that hasn't gone away. It was at least 60 years ago when I was at an RAF base and airmen in the local cinema were told over the radio to leave re preparing for readiness with the Soviets etc....They know any move to use nuclear weapons will destroy their own country by immediate retaliation full stop...Unfortunately Putin has us all hiding behind the settee including NATO and the UN who is a complete waste of money and should be abandoned. | buzz24
30/4/2022 22:22 | Unchartered waters 1rob. We are squarely looking into the eyes of a mad man. Even a 20% buy back per annum in this climate won't affect things. There is a small, but not insignificant chance we are at the end of the trail. If he hits a NATO. Country, if he puts his aircraft within the airspace of a NATO country, it's shooting time. All the Blackjack, Blinder and Bear activity over the past 20 years has never posed a threat. He's flying over the Baltic directly at NATO countries, same in the Black Sea.Shares could become worthless very quickly, and post a hot strike.... We will wait to die.Not alarmist, but worthy of consideration.Person | klotzak
30/4/2022 15:29 | Beware those of you hoping for lower AV share prices to reinvest your dividend and B share proceeds You may well be lucky But the AGM is on the 9th May after which the BOD could announce a further Share Buy-back Programme...so you could well be in competition!! | 1robbob
