Michel de Rosen succeeds Cato Halsaa, former CEO of Telenor, as Chairman of ESOA. In thanking Cato he said: "During the last year, under Cato's leadership, ESOA has been shaping the Brussels debate around spectrum. The goal is to ensure recognition of the role of satellites by demonstrating our sector's heavy use of radio frequencies and by promoting an honest debate about what spectrum is actually required for what services. In 2013, the European Commission is taking concrete steps to facilitate the roll-out of satellite broadband in support of the Digital Agenda 2013 target of broadband for all. This is important work for European citizens and for the future sustainability of our sector.I am very proud to take on the responsibility of driving ESOA's ambitions forward in the coming years."

Europe's satellite operators have shown solid growth in recent years in a challenging overall economic environment. They are world leaders in their field, providing a backbone for Europe's space industry: this is vital given that the EU is about to embark on implementation of its first Space Industrial Policy through DG Enterprise & Industry. The Commission has recognised the crucial role of satellite operators, but will need to follow through with implementation actions such as working with other DGs to help regions understand how they can take advantage of satellite solutions to develop broader access to digital services by European citizens and businesses.

Michel de Rosen concluded: "Satellites provide everyday, emergency and strategic services across the globe and most particularly to citizens in areas unserved by other technologies. In pushing for a Digital Single Market, DG CONNECT has realised the need for satellitesto make 100% broadband coverage a reality. Beyond this, our technologies will be a key infrastructure for tomorrow's "converging world", relievingbottlenecksand working in a hybrid configuration withterrestrial networks as they become congested by bandwidth-hungry video content demanded by users. They are therefore also directly relevant to next generation networks and services of the future

They have not with held an IMS they just have not issued one and they dont have to.If you look back you can see they have only ever issued one as far as I can see.

I see James Henderson (fund manager) has exited AVN this may be the cause of the price falling although I am unaware how much stock he had to shift.

Looking forward to the year end trading update next month so not long to see how things are going

I have no idea whether O3b is a threat because you cant get anything out of Avanti :(
----------------

i guess the directors dont see it as a threat as why would have they bought a load of stock this year in avn, crazy low valuation here back to 2011 levels, cant last.....

Rogk, you didnt answer my previous post. You have gone from ramptastic to doom merchant in the last few weeks on here and on iii. Does this mean you are out as it sure seems that way. Im not looking for an argument just trying to understand where you sit.

There seems to be a lot of doubt around. In such times I find it useful to re-read the last results. These are from 12/02/13. This reassures me that all is on track. I am investing in AVN for the long term.

And to add to Gekks commentary from The Register, as medium orbit sats go around the earth for some period of time (50%?) their bandwidth is passing over the Pacific and Atlantic so there is a lot of wastage. However, my long stated opinion is that there can never be enough satellite capacity so room for everyone. But as an investor I only care about Avanti financials, so waiting with bated breath.

Well, O3b got their first FOUR satellites successfully launched tonight.

"The company expects to start services at the end of the year, once it gets eight spacecraft in orbit, but the intention is to put up perhaps as many as 20 eventually."

If you're posting about O3b, why not be more complete - ie

"Geostationary satellites can cover huge areas and need only point in one direction, while O3b needs at least five (and will be using eight) - and they'll have to constantly redirect their spot beams as they arc across the sky....

will likely be a decade before we know if the $1.3bn investment the partners have already spent pays off. O3b isn't publishing its financial data or predictions..."

Also compare the greater terminal requirements against a geo-stat service

It's taken a while, but O3b is finally about to launch.

Will this be the end for AVN?

"...By flying in a Medium-Earth Orbit of 8,000km, the satellites will be a quarter of the distance from Earth than is the case with traditional geostationary (GEO) telecommunications spacecraft, which sit some 36,000km above the planet.

This should reduce substantially the delay, or latency, of the signal as the voice or data traffic is routed via space.

"The network was designed to avoid much of the difficulty that satellite connectivity provides today which is this delay," said O3b CEO Steve Collar.

"We've all been on a satellite call and you have that 600 milliseconds delay, which doesn't sound like much but it's enough to make that connection almost unusable. It's just as much of a problem on data networks. If you are on the internet and are searching for a site, it affects your behaviour if you get slow responses. You'll stop using the service. We wanted to fix those problems and the only way to fix them is to bring the satellites closer to Earth."

O3b is promising round-trip transmission time of a little more than 100 milliseconds.

The satellites will operate in the high-frequency Ka-band and have the capability to deliver 10 beams, at 1.2Gbps per beam, to each of O3b's seven operational regions.

The company expects to start services at the end of the year, once it gets eight spacecraft in orbit, but the intention is to put up perhaps as many as 20 eventually.

It has taken about six years to put the O3b project together. Important backers include not only Google but SES, one of the big players in the traditional satellite communications business.

The first four satellites are sitting atop their Soyuz rocket waiting for launch

O3b was born from founder Greg Wyler's frustration with the difficulty of connecting a modern teleco in Rwanda to the global fibre optic network, and the constraints that placed on performance.

O3b actually stands for "other three billion" - the number of people whose poor communications experience is expected to improve over the coming decade. O3b sees itself as an important agent of that change.

"There are two billion people in the world that are connected to the internet today; there are five billion who are not; and three billion who will be in the course of the next 10-15 years," said Mr Collar. "The other three billion is our target - that's who we're trying to reach, and that's where our name comes from."

The Jersey, Channel Islands-based outfit has raised more than $1bn to build its space and ground infrastructure..."

Strictly speaking it isn't against the rules for a Director to buy or sell just before an IMS but "best practice" would suggest a 30 day period leading up to an IMS where Directors wouldn't be allowed to buy/sell , when Paul Walsh bought shares last month it was fairly clear that there was no IMS coming.

A Practitioner's Guide to the Financial Services Authority Listing Regime ...

"Interim Management Statements must be published between a period of 10 weeks after the start and 6 weeks before the end of the first and second six months of the financial year"

so we should have had an IMS before the 17th of May , last year it was released on the 14th of May and the year end statement came on the 11th of July, we can expect the year end statement in the next 2 to 3 weeks but for some reason they didn't release an IMS , we've had nothing since the Interims in February so the decision not to release an IMS is odd .

It should be remembered that Avanti are an AIM stock and as such are not bound to comply with the main market rules, but to say that they would and then not follow through is bad form and leaves them wide open to rumour and speculation.

RogK, #291

That isn't so. Only the Interim and Full Year results create a 'close period' when Directors' dealings are prohibited. Outside those times, the only issue prohibiting Directors from dealing would be if they are in possession of undisclosed inside information. See the Model Code -

Paul Walsh will retire from Diageo with shares worth about £15.5 million. He also has a pension pot worth £19.2m, which would pay out £578,000 a year.

So......£34k?

I just recall whenever they did updates on individual contracts the shareprice would not react or more likely go south. I know some people are making a fuss out of this IMS but for the right or wrong reasons I dont know.

As we know, Avanti aren't exactly enthusiastic about shareholder communication ("Avanti does not accept Investor Relations queries by e-mail."!) but they are clear enough about what they do regard as the standard required to meet their aspirations of moving to the main market -

"These announcements are the year-end preliminary results, the half year results, a year-end trading update (sometimes known as a pre close statement) in July and Interim Management Statements in the 2nd and 4th quarters."

They are, therefore, due to issue an IMS before 30 June followed by a Trading Update in July. I agree it's getting a bit tight, but they haven't departed from their own guidance yet......

Rog, d'you really think Paul Walsh would have bought recently if there was a chance of a problem? I'd also like a statement BUT because of this recent buy don't have the fears you clearly have. Maybe they're waiting on a particular event (contract, etc?) before they report...

A good report could be very very good for the share price.

No news is no news. You can manufacture a scare if you work hard at it but there is still no news. When there is news I will assess until then it is pure speculation.
The last news was a director buy. That is if anything positive. 33K is not a trivial amount...not massive, granted.
