Nice piece in todays Sunday Times in support of satellite technology, Avanta and Hylas1 lead the article. Nothing new really except to confirm that satellite is a fast growing market, good place to be, recession proof.

kimball, excellent find.

I particularly liked this bit:

While several prospective Ka-band satellite operators have reported trouble in securing orbital slots and frequencies in their desired coverage areas, Avanti says it has plenty.

"We have enough spectrum available to launch perhaps 20 satellites," Williams says.

Yes Backmarker I remember the ZX80 and Sir Clive's first calculators, I still have my "guessing stick" somewhere.

Well we are up still not soaring away but heading in the right direction.

no seriously yorgi et al, I read somewhere that 90% of functioning earth orbit satellites have less than 25% of the computing power of an X box 360.

I guess they dont need it and the less the better when a service visit for a reboot would cost more than the normal Geek Squad rate!

It is just a box with a few bits and pieces to enable communications and some routing, lots of tin foil, a gyroscope and those flashing lights that no one can see.

I'm quite happy to know that, the less to go wrong, the better we sleep.

it appears that Wednesday's rise may just about have broken through the downtrend line.

we need another day or two of solid rises to confirm this, but I'm hopeful.

yorgi,

in that case you'll probably remember the ZX80, too ;~}

fortunately, HYLAS-1 is a bit more sophisticated than that, or an Xbox. still, it would be amusing to imagine the HYLAS test engineers playing Pong on it during their tea-breaks.

see you aren't a techie then yorgi?

either that or just very old.

they didn't put your sense of humour in the rocket and send that up as well did they?

maybe when they turn Hylas on, it will get beamed back? :-)

Then we will have a multitude of Xboxes in the sky and everyone will be able to have their own xbox in the sky.......What's an Xbox Chrissey :-) ? A box for keeping oxo in ?
yorgi

it's still an Xbox in the sky, what if everyone starts launching them, particularly the slim versions, less weight, more chips!

1. Satellite performing above expectations and is online.

2. No competition to satellite technology for remote areas that is developed at present and from research demand is greater than supply

So both wrong I'm pleased to be able to correct you attrader
