Bloody hell. Didnt see AML doing this. Sold well too early.

Ho hum - in the meantime BRE is in the doldrums a bit and could do with the expected breakout.

Technicially speaking, i couldn't cere less.

In reality, I do wonder. But surely the re-insurers would have learned from past experience and reduced their exposure, and I believe they have.

Crude rose by more than $1 on Friday amid concerns that a tropical depression in the Caribbean could develop into the first major hurricane of the season.

...will be interesting to see if any one Co. of this sector starts getting the shakes...

Yep, I'm out totally now, too. Got 269.53p on my last sale. Can't say it hasn't had a decent bounce. I'm wary of buying anything over Sept/Oct and early November.. usually big market corrections tend to come in those months, and we are due the 4-year cyclical low then too. Risky days ahead imho.

I still hold CHU, however, and would buy back in here at 240p.

rgds all.

Simple supply and demand. With an extra 5.5m shares on the market, the price should drift down.

253 is support.

You watching BRE at the mo kid? The ascneding triangle looks ripe for upside breakout soon. MACD is bullish too. The pressure is building...

I took the chance to sell half my holdings just before today's close. Will be back in on the next sell-off. 220p -> 270p in 2 months' isn't bad going. Short-term upside from here is limited imho.

22/8 evening star? Advance block formation?

1. Latest rally on falling volume.
2. Long upper shadow 18/8.
3. Shortening white bodies = Advance Block?
4. 270 resistance.

Time for AML to catch it's breath me thinks...

edit - out of AML, into BRE like the kid says

I'm in looking for 290 - I sometimes get the feeling that some analysts get their info from reading ADVFN boards ha ha.

Well said, Farnes. Am tempted to take some profits here, but I think the FTSE's got another couple of % upside which could pull AML over 270p. Sticking with it for now..

Sod analysts, they make a living from pedaling second hand info.

Price discounts everything, and technically AML was building so much bullish pressure that the 220p level was pathetically cheap.

253 should now be new support, and 270 new resistance.

Are you in kid?

CSFB thinking along the same lines...

Fri - Credit Suisse upgraded insurance underwriter Amlin to outperform from neutral in anticipation of strong first-half results. The broker told clients it believes that fears over another severe hurricane season have weighed on the stock, but that these fears are overdone

I covered my hedge on Monday at around 237ish. Think I might beging building it again soon, as I think the markets are vulnerable to another selloff soon. Let's see what happens into options expiry.

This is the old Technicals v Fundamentals arguement.

And hence, what makes a market.

Ceterus parabus.

Barnes, The weather will totally affect sentiment in this sector regardless of well managed exposure. If some dark monster comes beating down on the coast at 150mph baying for total destruction then the insurance/reinsurance sector is not where you want to be holed up.
Amlin though has a low relative net exposure and handled the last season profitably so I think a bit of wind will only cause changes in its share price for dramatic effect.

US hurricane season runs from June to December.

2005 was a particularly bad year for hurricanes in the US.

June to December 2005, AML share price went from 175p (approx) to 220p (approx).

Why do you keep banging on about hurricanes kid? And how does this affect the AML sp?

Hurricane Chris downgraded (or you could call it unwinded). That's 1 down about 15 to go.
NOAA's 2006 Atlantic hurricane season outlook indicates an 80% chance of an above-normal hurricane season. The outlook calls for a very active 2006 season, with 13-16 named storms, 8-10 hurricanes, and 4-6 major hurricanes.

Farnes, not really sure. I'm only 80% hedged, so still net long on these a bit, but just trying to minimize the downside risk. I think it'll take sub-240 to unwind properly, maybe down to around 230p. All healthy and good as weak money is flush out.
