Indeed FTSE futures -300pts

Never more obvious now that you should only ever buy shares with money that you can afford to lose.

Virus pain could yet strike Associated British Foods

Coronavirus had had little impact on Associated British Foods’ (ABF) half-year results but Hargreaves Lansdown says it may come under longer-term supply chain strain.

The group, which operates food brands and owns Primark, used its half-year results to warn some of its food factories were operating at lower capacity because of the outbreak of Covid-19 and although Primark has been unaffected that could all change.

Analyst Sophie Lund-Yates said there was concern about Primark disruption because it ‘sources a broad range of its products from China’.

‘The good news is the group has existing suppliers in other regions, which could be called on to plug any holes in the production line,’ she said.

‘It also builds stock in the lead up to Chinese New Year, meaning it has extra inventory to fall back on for now. The net effect is Primark is well placed to handle near-term disruptions, but it’s one to keep an eye on.’

My best performing share today .

Open:

Primark owner Associated British Foods was in the red after saying it was looking at stepping up production from Asian suppliers to mitigate any longer-term impact from the coronavirus in China where it sources a broad assortment of products. The company said sales at Primark are expected to be 4.2% ahead of last year in the first half at constant currency and 2.5% ahead at actual exchange rates, driven by increased retail selling space and level like-for-like sales.

Primark could be struggling with it's imports from China with this virus, as container ship movements are now restricted
