U.S. interest rates hit 14-year high in inflation battle
===========================================================

The U.S. central bank has pushed interest rates to the highest level in almost 15 years as it fights to rein in soaring prices in the world's largest economy.

The Federal Reserve announced it was raising its key rate by another 0.75 percentage points.

Borrowing costs are expected to climb more - and remain high, the bank warned.

The move comes despite mounting concern that the cost of controlling inflation could be a harsh economic downturn.

Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell said the rate rises were necessary to slow demand, easing the pressures putting up prices and avoiding long-term damage to the economy. But he conceded that they will take a toll.

"We have got to get inflation behind us," he said. "I wish there were a painless way to do that. There isn't."

This company had 125p EPS in the last full year. It could return to that level in the next clean year, 2023/4.

ANOTHER DAY & ANOTHER PROFIT WARNING
=====================================

Shares in the online retailer THG (The Hut Group) fell heavily after the company downgraded its full-year expectations amid a challenging trading environment, and reporting a 60% decline in first-half core earnings.

Russ Mould, retail analyst at AJ Bell said: ‘THG declared it had made “substantial progress”, but investors who have suffered a 92 per cent share price loss since the company joined the stock market may think otherwise.’

FACT: Only fools and LOSERS buy shares in UK retailers during a recession.

I think the comment about consumer spending are pretty obvious, particularly to the market. I think what matters is at what point the share price becomes attractive with all the bad news taken into account. I suspect not yet
