The effects of inflation on consumer spending in action. IMO there will be profit warning upon profit warning for the next 12 months in almost every sector. - - -

Fuji , wolf has been invested heavily in Asos since way above 5000 ( back in the christh days ) and boo since way above 330 and I believe THG …

Having lost 80% plus of his portfolio he wants to know when he will get his money back ?
When will he be a wild wolf once more ?
As at the moment he is just a maggot in wolf clothing …

Inflation is spreading like plague all over the world. I cannot believe there are investors who still believe "there will be a recovery" of some sort.
The last nail on the coffin of the market in general will be seen next Christmas where retail sale will be the most horrible ever.

There will always be some bounces along the way but the trend is definitely down. This is reflected in consumer spending at all levels - As is shown in Ocado profit warning. Consumers are the key to the strength of any economy. If nobody is buying, nothing will be sold = output has to drop and unemployment has to increase if less output is needed. All this means everything has to re-adjust, including the stock market. - - -

The Bank of England recently warned that with most UK households already struggling to pay their bills and to buy food, the current Recession is likely to be long and hard, with unemployment set to rise and consumer spending continuing to fall.

as soon as investors realise that conditions will be normal by spring they will start to buy stocks which can deliver growth over the next 10 years. that realisation could come at any time (and timing it is impossible)

According to the Financial Reporting Council, ASOS plc is facing serious accusations of attempting to manufacture a "soft landing" in the City ahead of announcing disappointing results.

ASOS plc has allegedly breached F.R.C reporting guidelines by briefing a few City analysts about a slump in profits rather than notifying all investors simultaneously.

Interesting comments from Russ Mould from AJ Bell (Stockbrokers):
==================================================================

“Plenty of companies around the world have bemoaned inflationary pressures thanks to the rising cost of labour, raw materials and energy. The latter now taking an even bigger bite out of company profits and causing further pain.

“Primark owner Associated British Foods is the latest to warn on profits because of higher energy bills, as well as unfavourable foreign exchange rates.

"Pressure on energy costs means profit margins will be squeezed, which is not a good situation for a low-ticket seller".

"The fact Primark buys most of its clothing stock in dollars adds to its problems, given that GB Sterling is under considerable pressure.”

“Making matters worse is declining disposable income for consumers. Primark might benefit from people trading down from more expensive retailers, but a large chunk of its core customer base sits in the lower-income bracket and these individuals are really feeling the financial pinch".

IF YOU REMOVE THE WORD PRIMARK, AND INSERT THE WORD ASOS OR BOOHOO, THIS PAINTS A VERY GRIM PICTURE, GOING FORWARD.

Today's statement was actually reassuring. Of course the environment is very difficult with current peak-pessimism but the KPIs are still strong and the company can sail through to calmer seas

Figures are in range previously given to markets. So no surprises.
Still profitable and has net debt of roughly 20% of market cap, that's pretty low.
They basically hunkering down to get through to the other side, then this is a 3x from here IMO.
Plus the money been spent on warehousing set up etc in the USA, that has potential to cope with 7bn a year throughput in future I believe.

Every bit of news through August was about cost of living and end of days predictions. Not surprising that the consumer is nervous. Increase foreign holidays will have impacted people buying during the summer. When people realise the world is not ending, things start going again.
