'Impact of Allied Minds write-downs disappointing, says Jefferies'

The write-downs and subsequent cull at Allied Minds (ALML), which specialises in commercialising intellectual property from universities, in April has failed to translate into gains, says Jefferies.

Analyst Ken Rumph retained his ‘underperform’ recommendation and target price of 124p on the shares, which edged half a penny lower to 160p yesterday.

‘After the write-offs in April under new chief executive Jill Smith, it’s slightly disappointing that the “tail” generated around $22 million of write-downs to offset gains from rounds in larger companies,’ he said.

He noted that cash reduced by $49 million and ‘a burn rate of c.$100 million per annum appears likely to rise’.

Although the shares currently trade at a 6% discount to net asset value, Rumph said ‘our concern remains that the largest companies are fully valued’.

Market report...

Star fund manager Neil Woodford had a bad day as Allied Minds, the invention business in which he is the biggest shareholder, reported widening losses over the first half of the year.
The firm lost £45.2million in the six months, compared to a loss of £40.5million over the same period last year.

Over the first half, Allied Minds invested £17.4million in its portfolio, which includes HawkEye 360 (which tracks illegal shipping activities) and cyber security firm Percipient Networks.

But the company, which funds and builds firms out of ideas formed in university labs, has suffered heavily since it cut funding for seven subsidiaries in April, and shares dipped 0.6 per cent, or 1p, to 160p.

Very stable share price after the big fall.
Stinks a bit IMHO.

I am not investing as I mentioned in an earlier post I simply cannot make any rational valuation on the stock.

Wow, she's having to put her mouth where the money is too.
The cash value is an ever depleting amount so removing that from your valuation it = 'something' ...licks finger, points into air

Well salpara. You were wrong.
I'm looking at it because of the massive fall
These things are impossible to value unless yo are on the inside

It has to be worth it's cash value + something so I suspect it's safe round the 60p region at the worst

Could it be £20 by then?

Is Woodford seriously wrong or is the current price seriously wrong? He invested heavily in this company at around 500 to 600 p about two years ago and one can now buy it two years later at a 75% discount to what he paid for.

The problem is that as a PI it is impossible to put a valuation on this stock as it has no metrics....free cash flow.....profit......divi yield.
Clearly it is worth something but I have no idea if that "something" is 20p or 200p.
I guess I will continue to keep an eye on it until we see a clear change in direction for the share price

We should mention Allied Minds briefly, cos they have a bit of satellite news out this morning
PM

This BridgeSat thing has got extra funding

PM
Which is perhaps interesting in that Allied Minds has to get alternative sources of fresh funding now for its underlying ventures

PM
Cos Invesco is clearly not funding them going forward

PM
And Woodford is probably too stressed now on the matter to do much more

PM
For what it's worth, some of the people round the founders reckon the new CEO at the company really doesnt mind about the ever-shrinking share price

Does this have a read across to NAV values on WPCT?.

Woodford has been right on so much over the years, and this
sector he should know like the back of his hand.

When he appeared to throw a tantrum early last year about a GSK split
(and favoured a four way split) I began to question some
of his views.

If as an example GSK had acquiesced with ViiV, and spun off 30-35%, the potential loss of revenue over the next decade would be enormous.

Maybe he will be right on ALM eventually, interesting to see how this develops.
