26/7/2004 08:58 | The show is just beginning. Wait until tomorrows papers start with the next batch of banks willing to submit an offer. | feelinlucky
26/7/2004 08:57 | Analyzer - tend to agree but Santander is no Mickey Mouse outfit, it would be the eighth biggest bank in the World if it pulls this off. Any strengthening in the price from here over the next few days could indicate interest is being shown by another possible bidder. | broadwood
26/7/2004 08:51 | so when do Santander's shares start trading again? this determines the value of anl's shares today excluding any premium for alternative bid expectation | kaibutsu
26/7/2004 08:49 | spanish cash is mainly "mattress money" with shifty EU handouts im sure - (girfriend is portuguese mauybe im biased ) or is it costa del boy money? maybe it makes sense after all | alexiskb1
26/7/2004 08:46 | Thanks for your comments Broadwood; I would rather Abbey was bought by a USA bank. I would prefer Citibank paper to Spanish ! Think I will just watch for now ! | analyzer
26/7/2004 08:44 | sounds like there are a few punters in at the higher prices as ever...but becoming better value minute by minute...now in an hour or two there might be real value again... | scotswhaehae
26/7/2004 08:44 | steady at 550. to punt or not to punt | alexiskb1
26/7/2004 08:41 | I hope there is a repeat of Safeway!! here, with Citi, Lloys etc coming in to bid as well. Who Knows!!! | corpbull
26/7/2004 08:33 | buyers coming in... why now.. ooo maybe not | alexiskb1
26/7/2004 08:33 | and the price continues to steadily drop, now 550p | ravisingla
26/7/2004 08:31 | if the bid is low then it is because the bidders have seen the books. ...worrying. | careful
26/7/2004 08:31 | Thought it was to be 'later in the day'- whatever that means | mclellan
26/7/2004 08:30 | I thought they were going to put the details out at 9am - anyone heard/seen anything concrete? | a77
26/7/2004 08:28 | Canford- didn't think so, but they are no doubt going to come out of it best of all! | mclellan
26/7/2004 08:28 | Board will only recommend - shareholders will need to approve | a77
26/7/2004 08:27 | so when do we(shareholders) make the decision then? | ravisingla
26/7/2004 08:23 | Can the directors agree a bid at a low price without going to the shareholders for approval? | mclellan
26/7/2004 08:22 | analyzer Its possible it is a situation where the fat lady hasn't begun to clear her voice yet. So many possible alternative bidders have had their names put in the frame - Bank of America, Wachovia and Citigroup from across the pond, not to mention Lloyds TSB and others over here. Factor which counts against U.S. bidders is the weak dollar making any moves by them very expensive at this time.As for the domestic banks, the regulatory issues are always there in the background but this seems less of an issue than it was three years ago. I reckon there is some weakness also this morning because there would be perceived to be selling of Santander shares by U.K small shareholders - butdon't discount all the Spanish shareholders who would want to buy (Bloomberg) Not sure I'd buy now - but I'm certainly not selling! | broadwood
26/7/2004 08:20 | "But the management shakeout still haunts him; he is facing charges over payoffs to ousted executives. If found guilty on the misappropriation charges , which he denies, he faces jail. He is also facing trial on charges that he helped clients evade taxes in the 1980s, again which he denies." That and all the South American debt. Sounds like another Credit Lyonnaise in the making. | mcel101
26/7/2004 08:19 | Abbey has let us shareholders down big time, if they accept bid, when we had better offer from other bank last few years and they did not accept. I hope shareholders will not agree, unless we can get 7.50 at least. | corpbull
