29/12/2017 15:48 | 14%, not bad , not bad at all. I have not been very active with shares the last couple of years, do keep a few banks and oilers. I have swing traded SSE and a couple of others on odd occasions but really spent most of the year waiting for SSE to drop to my buy price to get in long term. Huh! fell right through my buy prices and was clear it was going to keep going so I wait. I have found it much easier just to invest in managed funds, ETF's or otherwise and they do a better job than I can overall. My pension money got 15% gains previous year and last year was around 5%, expecting a good year again as recently the funds invested in are doing well (some 45% up)since April...so will be great if they hold onto those gains. | jonjonck
29/12/2017 14:55 | I'm glad you mentioned shares JJ Curious about other peoples' investing ideas? As the Markets are hardly mentioned on here, but I'm sure you all have some pearls of wisdom to share. I mostly own FTSE100 shares these days, bought for long term buy and hold, with re-invested dividends. All held in an ISA. So they are safe from the taxman! My largest holdings are: RDSB HSBA AZN RIO I currently have a portfolio of 24 shares which has returned 14% this year. So I'm very pleased. I hope others here have had a good year with investments. Curious to know how you may have done in 2017? | gateside
29/12/2017 14:46 | JJ - SSE Yes still holding these from many years ago. Used to be my largest holding. Currently hold 3 utilities: SSE PNN and NG. All 3 have had a poor year. Why? The Market is spooked with Corbyn getting in power and McDonnell nationalizing just about everything in the whole sector along with the railways and the Royal Mail etc etc. But where are they going to get the money to do this? Besides are they going to win the next election? I somehow doubt they will. I will not get into a Brexit debate here, but any election is a long way off, as the DUP will not bring down the Tories, as this is their chance of influencing power. So I feel that it is safe to keep holding utilities. I am happiest with NG. as a large proportion of their earnings come from the USA these days, so McDonnell won't be able to get his grubby little hands on that part of the business. Happy too with PNN as they also have their waste management business, in addition to water. Which leaves SSE - they announced in the autumn that they are going to create a separate company with n-power for their customer side of the business. This is due to be de-merged by autumn 2018. This will allow SSE to focus on power generation, which will be safe from Nationalization. With their focus on green energy, and being shot of the customer side of the business, I see SSE doing well. I don't see Labour getting in power, if they do, it would probably have to be in coalition, so many of their plans for Nationalization most likely won't happen. Which leads me to believe that the Markets have over reacted and Utilities are a good buy at current levels. All my own opinion... I could be wrong! | gateside
29/12/2017 12:56 | Just thought of another use for the 20 ton press - crushing empty food and drink cans...can do 5 together so what a time saver. | jonjonck
29/12/2017 11:10 | I shall now rack Gates' brain. SSE? Is it going to start climbing again soon or keep on the down trend? Strikes me it is worth more than it is, but market is very negative about utilities just now and SSE as it loses its customer share, but I see SSE as making its money more as a generator and wholesale supplier, along with Green energy and Windymill things etc. | jonjonck |
