29/10/2008 15:34 | More good stuff from the web site: "Exciting results for customers of new bus fuel saving system 16 October 2008 The first fuel saving system designed specifically for buses, in active use by around 600 drivers, indicates that bus operators could save 30% on their fuel bills. With diesel costs continuing to rise, operators are saving an average of more than £2,000 per vehicle. At the same time as reducing fuel consumption, ECOManager also reduces carbon emissions - lowering a fleet's carbon footprint by over 5,000kg per bus every year. The ECOManager system includes a real time driver's LED display which changes from green to amber to red according to their driving, providing instant efficiency feedback. The 'Black Box' records each journey and provides fully automated reporting by driver, bus or route. The system integrates with the vehicle's CAN system, therefore uses actual data rather than estimates based on parameters and assumptions. By altering driver behaviour, ECOManager also reduces accidents and makes for a more pleasant passenger experience. Operators have found that the savings extend beyond just fuel, with maintenance costs also reduced through improved wear and tear, including tyres. Insurance costs are also reduced, due to a reduction in accidents and claims attributed in the past to harsh braking. 21st Century has developed a four-tier training programme to work alongside the software to maximise the benefits and maintain the savings. Drivers who require additional training can be identified through the comprehensive reporting system. Drivers in the trial have welcomed the feedback, and some have reported improved fuel consumption in their own vehicles as a result. According to the company, the system pays for itself within a very short time-frame, as Paul Rogers explains: "Most fuel saving devices operate independently of CAN but ECOManager uses CAN data to achieve at least a 5% improvement in fuel economy, and the results so far have shown that even better fuel economy is easily achievable. When you add in additional savings on maintenance and insurance, plus the improved passenger experience and benefits to the environment, it is clear to see why many operators have contacted us. Those already using ECOManager will continue to reap benefits throughout the life of the vehicle." " | rivaldo

24/10/2008 07:11 | The TFL trials have now made the TGP/21st century web site FYI - at last! "Transport for London trials live CCTV 20 October 2008 Transport for London is trialling an innovative new CCTV communications system that allows them to view live images from buses across the capital. Linked to the radio system which instantly connects every London bus driver to the TfL central bus control room, LIVEview streams live images directly into the TfL control room, CentreComm. The new system, developed by 21st Century, integrates different technologies to enable users like TfL, or in some cases transport companies, to view live images from any vehicle on demand. The aim is to improve safety and security for passengers and drivers and to improve the available information in the event of an incident for those who need to prioritise the response. All TfL buses in the trial are fitted with special digital CCTV systems with a built in internet server and LIVEview is designed to work alongside the system which records digital footage from up to 12 on-board cameras located inside and outside the vehicle. LIVEview allows the images to be streamed in realtime using MPEG4 or MJPEG, rather than waiting for footage of an incident to be downloaded once the vehicle returns to the depot. If a driver alerts CentreComm to a problem that has just occurred, the digitally recorded images can be re-wound to show the incident develop, while the system continues to record. CentreComm staff will immediately be able to see what has occurred and what level of response is required. The images from each camera can be viewed individually or simultaneously from CentreComm. Paul Rogers, Director of Sales and Marketing for 21st Century, comments: "We are delighted to be chosen to provide LIVEview for this trial. In the event of an incident arising, it will improve the response from emergency services as they will have much more detailed information about the type of incident and its location." Andy Thompson, Head of Performance development at TfL said: "Every London bus has a comprehensive, recordable CCTV system fitted. As technology advances, we are keen to explore how this invaluable bus CCTV system can be further improved to bring even more benefits to passengers." " | rivaldo
23/10/2008 14:44 | That's why I'm invested here - little downside and much upside imo given the asset position and the growing core business. I don't think this has been picked up here either from Arriva's recent results - looks like Eco-Manager is to be rolled out: "Technological innovation can also help change behaviours. Arriva continues to work in partnership with transport authorities in various parts of the UK to deliver real-time passenger information at bus stops. This year in north west England we have run encouraging trials of 'EcoManager', a fuel use optimisation system. It includes a simple in-cab display that, together with driver coaching, helps bus drivers reduce fuel consumption. Plans are now being developed to extend its use further. Similar technology is in use on Arriva trains in Bavaria." | rivaldo
23/10/2008 14:32 | Yes, Rivaldo. Not just Gyllehammer hoovering up! I would have thought that if the Freehold sale goes through then TG21 would represent a prime takeover target being a debt-free company with growing potential. Correct me if I'm wrong. | qut
23/10/2008 12:40 | Indeed. It's as if they want to keep it quiet for the time being....especially since today we see more senior management share buying: "TG21 has today been informed that Mr Paul William Frodsham has purchased a total of 300,000 ordinary shares in the Company, bringing his total holding to 3,486,190. Following this purchase, Mr Frodsham's total beneficial holding represents approximately 4.27 per cent. of the Company's issued share capital." Looks like another 100k buy at 4p just now too. Go-Ahead (TGP's client) issued a good trading statement today. Their recent results included this encouraging snippet (with relevance to Eco-manager etc): "Cost control is an ongoing feature across all of our bus operations. Fuel accounts for around 10% of our costs and we have now hedged all of our requirements for the year to June 2009 and around half of the following year's requirements. In addition, we are making good progress with fuel efficiency savings through driver training and monitoring technology." | rivaldo

21/10/2008 07:56 | Now this is definitely excellent news - surely worth an RNS (maybe an RNSNON at the least?): "CCTV trial gives police live view of bus passengers Filed 20/10/08 Bus passengers are to be monitored in real-time by the Metropolitan Police and Transport for London staff as part of a pilot scheme announced this week. Mayor of London Boris Johnson announced that TfL has begun a six-month trial of live CCTV on a north London bus route, fulfilling one of the Mayor's election manifesto commitments. Twenty one double-decker buses have been fitted with technology that will allow pictures to be beamed live to the Centrecomm control centre shared by TfL and the Metropolitan Police's Transport Operational Command Unit. When bus drivers on the trial route make a radio call to the control room, operators are now able to use the new technology to access real-time images from the bus in question. Pictures are beamed via secure and encrypted mobile networks directly from the buses to the Transport for London control room. Operators, working directly alongside officers from the Metropolitan Police, will be able to view any of the cameras on the bus and direct police officers to the scene if required. The trial will monitor and analyse the use of the technology to decide whether it can help deal with incidents on buses more effectively. Boris Johnson, said: "I want our public transport to become world renowned for its safety. And I am determined to banish the sad minority of hoodlums and trouble makers that have blighted our buses. Having the facility to access live pictures from buses travelling around the capital will mean we can play a far more effective role in sending police officers to sort out troublemakers. If this trial is successful then we will consider rolling out the system on other routes as part of our campaign to stamp out the casual disorder that led to a culture of fear on public transport." Andy Thompson, performance manager at London Buses, added: "We know this technology works and now we are going to test its application to the London bus network. While crime is low on London buses, we know there is more to do, which is why we are always looking at ways to improve safety, and our passengers' perception of safety, while they travel on our network." TfL will carry out an evaluation of the trial with Professor Martin Gill, an expert in CCTV, and will report back to the Mayor with their recommendations in June next year. Technology company 21st Century, owned by TG21, is supplying the CCTV system for the scheme. Currently, more than 20% of all on-bus CCTV systems in London are supplied and installed by 21st Century, which has worked with bus operator Arriva for over eight years as a partner developing vehicle technology solutions including CCTV, fuel reducing technology, passenger counting and LIVEview for TfL. Every London bus currently has a CCTV system installed that records images, which can be downloaded on request. There are 60,000 CCTV cameras operating on London's 8,000 buses and more than 650 requests are made every month for images to be downloaded by the police. These images can help with incidents which do not happen on the bus network, but which may capture victims or suspects travelling to or from the scene of an alleged crime as well." | rivaldo
20/10/2008 19:02 | Excellent news of course. Isn't TGP's m/cap only around £2.8m now? Daniel Stewart are naturally being cautious, but you'd have thought if Drake want top take the option in this market then they must see pretty good upside: "Potential Disposal TG21 today announced that it has signed an agreement with Drake Investments Limited under which Drake has the option to purchase TG21's freehold premises in Mitcham, Surrey for a £2.7m cash consideration. Following exercise of the option, the site will be redeveloped and TG21 will enter into a lease for a new facility on part of the redeveloped property. The option is subject to Drake obtaining satisfactory planning permission to redevelop the site. The option will lapse after 18 months if the sale has not completed and there are no planning appeals outstanding at that time. It is intended that the net cash generated from the disposal will be applied to repay any remaining bank borrowing secured against the premises with the remainder invested into TG21's public transport solutions business. Since the disposal of much of the group's distribution division last year, TG21 has not fully utilised the office and warehouse space at its Mitcham head office. If completed, the agreement provides TG21 with the opportunity to move its operations to purpose built premises and would release significant capital for re-investment into its fast growing public transport solutions business. We anticipate that it will take approximately 12 months for Drake to obtain planning permission to redevelop the site-at which point the company will exercise its option to make the acquisition. As such, until planning permission is received by Drake, we are assuming that the disposal will not materialise." | rivaldo
20/10/2008 07:04 | RNS Number : 1729G TG21 Plc 20 October 2008 20 October 2008 TG21 plc ('the Company' or 'the Group') Potential Disposal Option for sale and partial lease back TG21, the vehicle installation service provider supplying public transport CCTV and other monitoring systems, today announces that it has signed an agreement with Drake Investments Limited ('Drake') under which Drake has the option to purchase the Group's freehold premises in Mitcham, Surrey for £2.7m cash consideration. 10/10/2008 10:32 | I suspect Mr G has bought a couple of times over the past 3 months since the last RNS when he crossed 22% on 31 July. There were a couple of decent buys that kept the price up. | nod

08/9/2008 20:20 | Interesting article here from today's Times in view of earlier comments about whether TGP's Eco-Manager could be applicable to trains - looks like it could: "Mindful of the £600million annual fuel bill for passenger and freight trains across Britain's rail network, drivers are also being taught how to maintain speed at maximum fuel efficiency - and keep to the timetable. Using simulators, drivers are advised how to achieve a "smooth" driving performance. Those who drive in a fuel-inefficient way, for example accelerating too quickly then braking hard, are sent on "eco-driving" courses." | rivaldo
08/9/2008 04:26 | qut - sort of... it will be 4 years in December since they struck their deal with 21C. It's over 2 years since they acquired options in Cyberline. But the legacy business is disappearing at a rate of knots and TGP has a large service network to keep busy. It needs to acquire and integrate. TGP has an option to acquire 100% of Cyberlyne CCL for 1 million. Option expires 30 June 2009. The loan to CCL of 430k is repayable on 31 December 2008. In the recent interims TGP said CCL needs investment so they may need to extend their loan. They didn't indicate that they would take up the option. | nod
07/9/2008 22:32 | Exactly nod - that's what they've been doing, haven't they? | qut
06/9/2008 08:36 | qut - 21st Century did very well as a tiny company to identify a niche and build a business. They developed an integrated solution for CCTV and driver/vehicle monitoring for buses. TGP has tried to develop new business in-house without much success in recent years. Maybe their best route to growth is to acquire small businesses that have an established product and client base. | nod |
