10/2/2003 17:41 | the appearance of Cinven/Candover (CC)as prime competition for any acquisition is probably the main reason for the fall. Institutions have lost confidence in the growth story. CC has seen what a good business scientific publishing is and can enter the market, offering cash each time while T & F has to go to the market to raise capital. After Wolters Klewer they are going for the BertelsmannSpringer sub. This will make them double the size of T & F and the obvious next target would be T & F itself. Meanwhile T & F are just picking up the crumbs which will be enough to probably keep a 10% rise in profits ticking over but not as exciting as the last few years. At this level, any further significant drop will create interest. | kenmill

09/2/2003 02:23 | so back to |TFG. a big nasty is the amount of sales to US libraries and Universities. the title profile would suggest this is very high. the recent Bush budget would suggest they ain't got no money to renew. but I'm getting some hard renewals data from a competitor in 10 days, if we can bear to wait, and see the renewals trend. | theape
