M&S Simply Food

SSP opened its first M&S Simply Food outlet at London's Liverpool station in 2001. Today, the M&S Simply Food concept is a market leader in the travel environment, appealing to commuters and travellers with a diverse range of needs.

SSP operates stores at a number of UK airports, train stations and hospitals under an exclusive franchise arrangement. Many of these stores are popular with local shoppers, as well as the travelling public. Opening times are more flexible than in high-street counterparts to suit the needs of the transient target market.

The product range features a high proportion of 'food to go' such as sandwiches, wraps, snacks, drinks and crisps, as well as superior quality ready meals, wines and beers.

MKS results showing increased profit due to outstanding food performance bodes well for SSP. Around £300m of SSPG turnover is from M&S Simply Food franchise stores.

SSP seem to have been busy at the drawing board this year.

My information (don't take it as gospel / dyor etc) is that they have secured a number of lets under Phase one of Network Rail's upgrade and expansion of Euston Station's retail space which is expected to be completed this summer. SSP are going to be partnering with real street food entrepreneurs to bring a Street Food concept to the station with brands such as 'Big Apple Hotdogs' and 'Rib Man'. The latter will have a product on the menu called "Holy F##k Hot Sauce" which illustrates how radical this is in comparison to the same old sandwiches and snacks their current brand portfolio have been peddling for years.

Another adventure they are embarking on is Barzetti Italian Kitchen at St Pancras International, which opened this month and is attempting to merge the Italian kitchen concept into a fast moving train station environment.

This is interesting as these avenues they are exploring would probably lead to wider margins as they are not going to be a franchisee passing on half their takings to Starbucks, Burger King, M&S etc.
