The market is in a mad mood - the Ch. Exec. buys 7k shares at 767, an action that would normally boost the price, but the market sends it down to 748.

Excellent results
Adjusted EPS 58.1 up 33%
Total D +20% - highest increase in the company's history.

I note they have now stopped the share buyback programme. If the cash flow continues at the same rate this will wipe out net debt within 12 months. Alternatively, if you listen to the results presentation on their website the 'acquisition' word is mentioned quite frequently - perhaps there is something in the pipeline which will use the cash.

Before today forecast EPS growth for 08 was 15%. That could now increase, but taking that figure a PEG 1 would be reached at 1002p. The 52 week high was 995 last May, so I consider that to be achievable within 12 months (the exact timing depending on the mood of the market as a whole).

The presentation is worth it just to get a feel of the good geographical and industry spreads of this company.


The price is now back to where it was in mid November

2007 YEAR END TRADING UPDATE

Spectris plc, the precision instrumentation and controls company, today issues a
trading update ahead of its results for the year ending 31 December 2007, due to
be released on 22 February 2008.

Trading in the second half of 2007 was robust and we expect organic sales growth
for the year, at constant exchange rates, of approximately 6%. Operating margins
continued to improve year-on-year and we expect to achieve mid-teens return on
sales for the full year.

Cash conversion is expected to be within the 90-100% range.

Current order levels remain strong with encouraging prospects across the
multiple industries and regions we serve.

If not, this must be a very overlooked share. I bought yesterday in anticipation of a good statement tomorrow. Among reasons:

www.spectris.com gives a webcast of the interim results presentation, which I have watched.

I noted the following:
1) Comment that the increase in the dividend, at 15%, was the highest for years due to their confidence in the outlook.
2) They are big in minerals and mining with operations in India – a growth area
3) 7% of turnover goes to R&D which is described as 'our lifeblood'.

On 1/11 as part of a larger article Shares magazine said:

This manufacturer of electronic and electrical equipment is also a cash generator. A remarkable 93% of operating profit was converted into cash in the first half. Debt is low and a share buy-back programme is in full swing.

Operating margins rocketed by almost three percentage points to 12.8% and should top 13% for the year and maybe 14% for 2008.

It is a boom time for Spectris, particularly as the European economy has gathered strength – some two-fifths of sales are in this region ,with a quarter to the US. Only 4% are in the UK, which is typical for the new breed of globally-competitive, fast-growth UK engineers.

bought in today, on the back of the UBS downgrade hopefully we will see 930 soon.
The dow is looking a bit weak at the moment though might hold things back a bit. Anybody got any interest goss on SXS.
