We've definitely broken out of the downtrend on the chart now. We should make progress from here.

On a straight eps basis the 2016 results look disastrous ie down 81%. However, if you then look at the eps numbers for the fourth quarter of 2016 and multiply by four you come up with some very healthy prospective numbers for 2017. As with most pharma companies the numbers will need to be picked over by the experts but there looks to me to be a pretty good story here that is struggling to get out!

Shire's balance sheet positively sparkles in comparison with those of Astrazenca and GSK and its intangibles are also much smaller - although still sufficient to wipe out shareholders' funds. The latter shouldn't be an issue as long as trading and cash flow is on the front foot - which it is here. The cash balance was historically low at the end of 2015 but should pick up unless there has been a big spend on capital items. What strikes me is that the share price has basically been treading water for the past 2 1/2 years. A good set of numbers could nearly halve the PE and then I started to ask myself where Shire fits in with the other pharma big boys. I came up with the answer 'too cheap' but it's only a personal view and I'm in for the longer haul.

>>When you look at SHPG on Nasdaq it's still in a downtrend.>>

Interesting. I'll check that out.

>>They also have a huge amount of debt ...>>

I thought they issued shares to buy Baltaxa. Will have to check that out as well.

I'm slightly cautious about the chart - I think it may have bottomed because of the currency (GBPUSD rate). When you look at SHPG on Nasdaq it's still in a downtrend.

They also have a huge amount of debt which has to be balanced with them looking cheap on earnings. I'm still watching them but I'm 50/50 on whether to buy or not.

Looks v appealing on earnings grounds and the chart appears to have bottomed, but if pharmas come under pricing pressure from Trump then (expensive) rare disease treatments might fare poorly.
