Initial Jobless Claims: -23K to 340K vs. 345K consensus, 363K prior (revised). Continuing claims -112K to 2.91M.

More on jobless claims: The big decline nearly erases last week's large and unexpected jump, and will do nothing to ease concern about "tapering." The 4-week moving average is little-changed at 339,500. S&P 500 futures remain lower by 0.95%, but bond prices continue to give up some of their big early gains, TLT +0.3%.

OT ... but from the "you couldn't make this up" planet ...

"As a result, committee Chairman Darrell Issa has ordered Lerner to be hauled back, and to answer the questions she evaded earlier today, after now having effectively waived her Fifth Amendment right in retrospect, or else be charged with contempt! "

BTW - Chairman Issa, a wealthy senator, was recently given a confidential
briefing by Chairman Bernanke. And US lawmen have waivers on insider dealing.

BTW - the proposed Brown-Vitter legislation suggests that $500+Bn US banks
should have 15% capital.

Concerns over the future of the U.S. Federal Reserve's monetary stimulus and weak Chinese factory data sent shares sharply lower and safe haven currencies like the yen higher on Thursday.

Yen a safe haven. Yeah right, just shows the madness of it all. It is just a trade based on no fundamentals whatsoever

"The flash HSBC Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for May fell to 49.6, slipping under the 50-point level demarcating expansion from contraction for the first since October. The final HSBC PMI stood at 50.4 in April."

That will be all the orders not coming from overseas.

Referring to the Asian meltdown this morning ....

"The market has been looking for an excuse for a correction," said Shane Oliver, Sydney-based head of investment strategy at AMP Capital Investors Ltd., which oversees $126 billion. "Bernanke's comments and China's PMI data provided the trigger for a sell-off.
