"Edit - perhaps the link refers to the old 'existing service'? Anyone able to shed any light on the new photo requirements? As things stand to mess around with all this to save £6 I'd rather just use the old process.

Edit 2 - just called the passport office who advised it does the cropping down for you but otherwise it must meet all the existing requirements including the 'plain cream or light grey background'. It apparently advises whether your photo is acceptable when you upload"

Yes just renewed my passport - used camera for photo - it does do some validation when uploading "passed initial checks or similar message" but you do get a warning that further checks are done.

Impressive serivce - by lunchtime on the day they received my old passport they had approved the application and ordered the new one. Online application time to courier delivering new passport was 8 days

No special care taken over photo - just made sure the rules were followed palin background ne shawdows/red eye and no smiling. Not exactly tricky

The quality of your photos

Your photos must be:

printed to a professional standard
taken within the last month
in colour on plain white photographic paper with no border
taken against a plain cream or light grey background
clear and in focus
without any creases or tears
unmarked on both sides (unless a photo needs to be countersigned)
unaltered by computer software

What your photos must show

Your photos must:

be a close-up of your full head and upper shoulders
contain no other objects or people
be in clear contrast to the background

have a neutral expression and your mouth closed
have your eyes open, visible and free from reflection or glare from glasses
not have hair in front of your eyes
not have a head covering (unless it’s for religious or medical reasons)
not have anything covering your face
not have any ‘red eye’
not have any shadows on your face or behind you

You can’t wear sunglasses or tinted glasses. You can wear reading glasses but your eyes must show fully through clear lenses without glare or reflections.
The size of your image

The image of you - from the crown of your head to your chin - must be between 29mm and 34mm high.

My local Photo booth is in ASDAS which also has a main Post office to check and send. Would i use that or for the sake of saving a tenner go to the effort and time to line up a perfect selfie?

Still plenty of average joe's using Photo Me booth's in Post Office where I went this afternoon, can't see many risking online stuff, many of 50's aren't going to fiddle around with all that stuff, still need photos for visas, driving license etc.

A good comparison is publisher BMY.They have grown revenue, eps, dividends year on year while investing in digital.

The threat was that digital via kindle and such like would kill paper books. They have rolled with it and embraced it unlike PSON who are playing catch up.

PHTM are well aware of the risks to revenues.

If you are renewing a passport, don't you ave to send the old one back ?
In that case what's the point sending a photo online when you'll have t use the post anyway ?

OREGANO - exactly. HMGovt cannot prescribe photo booths and say no other method- they have to offer alternatives. But even when passports could be smiley and casual, there was no point in risking a wasted application by sending in a holiday snap!

oregano; which is why doing it through a specifically designed app which checks these parameters is the solution. Data from Ireland says that rejection rates of such photos are now lower than 'traditional' photo studio/booths submissions

you have been able to take photos with a camera / mobile in the UK for some time.

there are otherwebsites to help you.

I tried doing it last time. it is nigh on impossible to produce a photo that you have any confidence will fit all criteria, particularly avoiding any shadow. if it does not fit the criteria, your application will be rejected /delayed. i wasted alot of time trying to get it right.

To avoid that risk, i spent £5 in a photo booth. i suspect most others will do the same.

If the rns announced today had not been in response to the plunge, but had been on a normal day, then it would have sent the share price through the roof. Alright, maybe not,... maybe just 10p higher.

The dividend yield for next year at 158p share price is 5.34% at 8.44p dividend. That dividend is announced as intended. On top of that is the real possibility of a special dividend.

Really can't see the Passport Office accepting mobile selfies, or a derivative thereof myself, if anything I would expect criteria to get stricter.

Did Jessops not go bust?

The brand was acquired by Peter Jones in 2013 and now back to 52 stores plus a deal with Sainsburys to open more in the larger supermarkets.

So they did go bust.He bought them out of administration.
I would like to see their accounts now.

They can only make so much from mini labs and passport pictures would be a very small % of revenue. As with PHTM the biggest threat to them would come from mobile phones.

After the little snippet about in talks with Her Majestys Passport Office, I added more, can't see this not going blue this week. Great news of a potential big deal in the offing. Can't get better than the CEO buying 3M shares @ 158p..that's usually one of the biggest buy signals around, happy bought down to 145p

I'M NOT bragging (of course!!) but I said it 12 minutes BEFORE the RNS:-

"23 Jan '17 - 12:23 - 7115 of 7122

Some countries, such as France, are going down a different route to the UK, and are requiring security developments on their passport photos. I think most countries will follow the French lead, not the UK's."

If you want to know any more, you can just ask me!

[Of course, major difference in RNS is it says UK itself(!!) is looking to follow France. I couldn't have hoped for that.]

Andy you'e typed exactly inexactly. Bought more when this first dropped. Laughable reaction though I am pleased some people still read the MIrror. As pointed out, this is not news. If Ph-me depended on passport applications it would be a MUCH smaller business

Some details on the new process:

Photos
If you use the new online passport renewal service you’ll need someone to take a photo of you using a digital camera or smartphone.

If you use the old ‘existing’ online service, send your application by post, or use the Passport Check and Send service, you’ll need 2 identical new photos of yourself.

Your application can be delayed if you don’t follow the rules about passport photos.

This last bit takes you to this link:

The link seems a bit unclear as it looks as if it was written for traditional photos, if it still holds who has a 'plain cream or light grey background' lying around their house they can use??

Edit - perhaps the link refers to the old 'existing service'? Anyone able to shed any light on the new photo requirements? As things stand to mess around with all this to save £6 I'd rather just use the old process.

Edit 2 - just called the passport office who advised it does the cropping down for you but otherwise it must meet all the existing requirements including the 'plain cream or light grey background'. It apparently advises whether your photo is acceptable when you upload.

"The Company believes its latest technology represents a major growth opportunity as the most secure photo ID solutions available and that accepting photos from mobile phones for official documents is incompatible with developing security requirements. "
