Last week saw the record number of total claims since Just Car Clinic, the second largest independent chain of collision repair centres in the UK, established a dedicated centre in 2010 giving motorists the benefit of processing claims outside of normal office hours. From 5th to 11th February a total of 470 claims were received at the centre, with 127 claims on Monday 6th making it the busiest day yet for new claims.

Yes. Not sure when but they said they intend to continue the dividend policy in the meanwhile. That will keep me happy.

harrogate - isn't it reasonable to expect the dividend to be paid out around the same time? Perhaps, they may be able to pay out the next dividend before the results are even out now.

Aleman,

Yesterday's rain turned to snow at tea time. The local weatherman suggested the danger of freezing rain had passed when it started to snow but we had more rain at midnight which froze cars solid and left black ice on the clearer bits of pavement. It looks like lots of the neighbours have either left cars at home or just haven't gone to work because of the conditions this morning.

Second round of freezing rain causes accidents in Cumbria, County Durham and North Yorkshire.

Can't say I'm looking forward to going out tomight. It's 0.7C and raining onto ground that has been frozen solid for nearly 2 weeks. (The canal's been frozen over a week.)

They estimated traffic was up slightly in Q4 after allowing for the weather. Q3 was better but it is worth remembering that Yorkshire tourism is booming and this might not hold for the full year.

The increases recently have been modest and we're still well short of the peak but we know that only marginal increases can be a big benefit to JCR. The question is if the regional traffic in JCR's territory has benefitted after being one of the worst hit in the recession and not seeing a modest bounce like that in the Southeast last year. I haven't seen any recent regional breakdown but regional PMI surveys indicated Yorkshire was doing very well in the last few months. Traffic on my runs remains very mixed. I would say slightly improving if I were forced to bet on it but I wouldn't say I see any signs of clear improvement, yet.

Any news on a potential results date?

I haven't read it but I would guess given the awful weather in Q4 2010 that is not much of a rise really. The fact is in my view we have had a permanent reduction in travel and claims behaviour that the industry has to live with. I know most things are anecdotal on this but I have a fried who has just started the Harrogate to leeds commute again after a break of 4 years and he says he can't believe the difference in traffic volume he is seeing ..It is much quieter than it was at all the different times he starts the journey.

Where are the gritters!?

A 25-mile (40km) stretch of the A1 has been closed northbound following a series of accidents overnight.

Police said no-one was seriously hurt in a series of collisions between Allerton Park and the Catterick area.

Officers described the road surface as resembling an "ice rink" and have been unable to say when it will reopen.

It's already -9C at Church Fenton!

Edit - and now a cloud's come over and it's rained - freezing instantly on everything it's hit.

I'm starting to think JCR might have a good winter (although this is split across two financial years). We had 4 local fleeting snowfalls of up to 4 inches before Christmas, 2 of which caused significant rush hour disruption around Bradford and, then, Kirklees and Sheffield - both reported lots of minor accidents due to lack of gritting and they are areas covered by JCR. Between the brief cold snaps, we had quite warm weather but it rained a lot (reservoirs are now above normal after a dry spring and summer). Since Christmas we have had a couple of longer cold periods, one of which was cold enough to freeze the canal, and now the current 3rd one which is the worst yet. I'm east of Leeds and we have 4-5 inches of snow with some slight drifting. We had a slight thaw today after -6C last night but it is already freezing with Leeds forecast to get to -8C and lower in rural areas. The Church Fenton weather station, which might the most central to JCR's territory, reported today's high as -2C and isn't expected to get above freezing again tomorrow. The outlook looks like thaw and freeze for the next few days with most of the snow still with us so ice in the daytime will continue be a problem. We are still getting occasional complaints about the level of gritting and questions over the quality of what is being spread. I've had to put my own down on the road and path as my minor housing estate road hasn't been done since they started two days ago, even though the council are talking about taking action to calm rat-run traffic.

For the first time in maybe twenty years i decided to use long distance Nat Express buses over Christmas.

The first one clipped an overhead branch which smashed its wing mirror, the second spent 25 minutes in a housing estate in Darlington, and the third broke down, ending up with a man with a hammer in an industrial estate heaven knows where spending twenty minutes knocking a piece back into shape - and the onboard loo was simply repulsive. of course it's anecdotal and yes I may have been unlucky, but it's all rather off-putting!

The Demise of the car is much exaggerated imho!

Weather that suits JCR continues. The M62 eastbound was closed with snow over the Pennine tops on Friday and there were problems with the accidents in the evening rush. It has been wet and subzero for the last 3 nights and the forecast is for it to get even colder through the week with -5 to -8C forecast for cities and less than -10C in the countryside on Wednesday night.

I don't know if we're set up for a good period of business but lots of rain and bits of snow before Christmas - that got local headlines with lots of rush hour accidents - should mean the old year ended okay and the current cold weather should mean the year is off to a respectable start.

Does any body if results will be at the beginning of March again, with the company now being private?

Petrol price is creeping up back to its high. National average is over 134p so only about 2p shy. Local traffic remains heavy, though. I think people are just buying smaller cars and driving the same.

Traffic has been shocking on my usual run so far this year after being hit and miss in the second half of last year and quiet up to Christmas. One driver's experience doesn't set a trend but I was wondering if it had anything to do with strong business activity in Yorkshire and Humberside, which is top of the UK after struggling near the bottom a year ago.

Yes with no onerous leases and a clean slate ..usual stuff. Not in JCR areas anyway in terms of work but I guess if NARG is still working it is good that they are still functioning

Thanks yorkshiret.

Nationwide trading inline but too expensive for my taste even with a near 10% divi.

Pity about DWS but JCR should receive more business because of it. Will JCR pick up any cheap assets from DWS ?

A couple of bits of news for you guys today:

1 - Nationwide have issued a trading statement

2 - DWS Bodyworks (a NARG member) apparently entered administration on Friday.

Fitch backs ban on referral fees for motor insurers
StockMarketWire.com
Fitch Ratings has backed moves to ban UK motor insurers from receiving any type of referral fees.

Fitch believes this would be positive for the industry and would represent a more meaningful step towards combating the rise in fraudulent claims and the increasing cost of bodily injury claims,

The measure - proposed by the Commons transport select committee - would go beyond the narrower ban announced last year, which was limited to referral fees from law firms that pursue personal injury claims.

The committee also said that the threshold for receiving compensation in whiplash cases should be raised, and if the number of claims did not fall as a result, legislation requiring objective evidence of a whiplash injury and of it having a significant effect on the claimant's life, should be introduced.

Fitch says these are also potentially positive, as they would bolster insurers' own efforts to combat the rising costs of settling bodily injury claims and of fraudulent personal injury claims, about which we have been sceptical in the past.

And it says Prime Minister David Cameron's announcement last week of plans to cap lawyers' fees from personal injury cases at £25,000 could help control insurers' legal costs - a key element in combating the negative impact of claims-encouragement, as Fitch identified in its sector outlook published in December.

Fitch has a stable outlook for the UK non-life insurance sector in 2012, believing its capitalisation, underwriting and operating trends will generally support the ratings.

Fitch continues to believe motor insurers that counter claims-encouragement through tighter underwriting terms and superior claims management will hold an advantage over competitors that focus solely on pricing.

Sure, if it's a longer temporary or permanent problem. Costs should be cut there and then not later when profits are walking out of the door. All my properties are run on tight costs. If I had to cut costs I wouldn't know where to look. That's how a larger business should be run too.

If you have 15% less vehicles going through each branch then you need less staff in each branch surely?
