22/2/2012 08:24 | My view has always been that the proposed Drax plant was far too big for biomass, and risked causing a shortage in supply. So I think the news below is good for Helius. Drax drops biomass plant plan 22nd February 2012 inShare.Share: By James Reed - Deputy Editor, Yorkshire Drax power station POWER generator Drax is to drop plans for a dedicated biomass-fuelled power station after deciding it posed too high a risk to the business. The company pointed to proposed Government subsidy levels for the technology, uncertainty over long term biomass contracts and potential costs linked to accessing the National Grid for its decision. Drax had proposed building two biomass-fuelled plants in partnership with Siemens Project Ventures. While it has dropped plans for the one earmarked for the Drax site it will continue to consider the second at the Port of Immingham. The Government approved plans for the two plants last August, hailing them as a welcome boost for energy security and carbon emission reduction. Peter Emery, production director at Drax, told TheBusinessDesk.com the Government appeared "relatively downbeat" about large-scale biomass projects and Drax had decided Ministers were unlikely to raise subsidies above the levels proposed last year. "When we looked at all the factors together our view was the Drax project was too high a risk in terms of producing an adequate return." He added: "The [Immingham] project is still challenging but we do think we stand a chance of delivering it." Mr Emery said Drax was considering bringing in additional partners on the Immingham project which had advantages over the Drax site in terms of delivery of biomass for burning. Drax is also lobbying the Government to increase its proposed level of support for burning biomass alongside coal in its existing operation. It already has the capacity to produce 12.5% of its output from biomass and has ambitions to eventually burn 50% renewable fuels. The company yesterday announced a rise in pre-tax profits from £254.9m to £338m as turnover grew from £1.65bn to £1.85bn. Mr Emery said: "We are very pleased with our performance in what is a volatile marketplace and with these financial results we are well placed for the future." A spokesman for the Department of Energy and Climate Change said: "It is of course ultimately for Drax to decide their investment priorities within the support framework that has been proposed for biomass electricity. "However, we welcome Drax's interest in stepping up co-firing with biomass - a low cost renewable which will accelerate the UK's move away from coal." | qvg

03/2/2012 10:24 | I saw an article recently generally showing that the alternative energy sector has performed badly over the last year. Just an unpopular sector I suppose. Jam tomorrow is spot on. Think I'll be moving on. | pilot48
03/2/2012 10:07 | The results appear okay to me and reveal no reasons for the recent share price dip. Obviously, lots of jam tomorrow but otherwise things sound to be progressing well. | spaceparallax

07/1/2012 12:29 | pilot thanks for that. i could not open the link, but from the exctract it seems they are reducing the project rather than increasing it - so hope the application will get accepted | qvg
06/1/2012 15:45 | Just been doing some Google searches and found a site with some London Gazette notices regarding RWE's application for consent regarding their revised plans for Stallingborough. I've pasted below the most recent one I could see from December 2011. From a quick glance, still seems to be at the consultation phase. "The Application seeks to amend the biomass generation plant (phase 1) of the development previously consented by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change on 16 June 2008. That consent was granted to Helius Energy plc. (The Application now excludes the construction of the bioethanol and biodiesel plants (phases 2 and 3) of the previously consented development). The Application was advertised in March 2010, with further and additional information having been advertised in October/November 2010." | pilot48
06/1/2012 10:38 | pilot, happy new year too! yes, it did seem notable by its absence! | qvg
06/1/2012 10:19 | Hi qvg and spaceparallax, happy New Year. To me, the relevance was the omission of any update on Stallingborough. They're pressing on with Tilbury and have now set up their own biomass supply, yet there was no mention of Stallingborough... I'm just wondering whether that's staying in the long grass or if an update could be forthcoming. All just navel gazing but curious to see the outcome of their "investment review". | pilot48
06/1/2012 09:22 | I suppose it's all good for biomass publicity | spaceparallax
06/1/2012 07:47 | pilot, thanks for that interesting article. but does it have any direct relevance to Helius? The news I am still waiting for is progress on Stallingborough. or have I missed something? | qvg |
