27/4/2016 08:20 | From Petra's trading update yesterday... Rough diamond prices up ca. 3.5% on a like for like basis in comparison to the average for H1 FY 2016, due to an improvement in rough diamond market conditions. | woodpeckers
27/4/2016 08:15 | From today's Times newspaper:- "The lyrics that Marilyn Monroe made famous could be truer than ever. Diamonds appear to be the best and sometimes even the only friend for some girls. Sales in the United States rose by 5 per cent last year to $39 billion, representing about 45 per cent of the global total and offsetting weaker demand in the rest of the world, according to an industry report from De Beers. Stephen Lussier, chief executive of the De Beers Forevermark brand, said that demand was being driven by young single American women buying diamond rings, necklaces and bracelets. “They are getting married later, so there are more young women with a decent income who want to buy jewels for themselves,” he said. “They aren’t waiting around to be given an engagement ring or a gift.” America helped to offset weaker sales in oil-producing countries such as Russia, Saudi Arabia and Brazil. Demand in the Persian Gulf fell by 3 per cent as consumers reined in spending amid the global slump in oil prices, which has hit the buying of luxury goods in upmarket malls in Riyadh, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Activity held up well in China, however, despite the slowdown in its economy. Sales rose by 3 per cent, boosted by Chinese buyers visiting Europe, Thailand and Japan. Globally, sales fell from a record $81 billion in 2014 to $79 billion last year. The relationship between American girls and their best friends is unlikely to end any time soon: De Beers said that the US would be the main driver of growth again this year." | alan@bj

21/4/2016 09:31 | Not saying PDL valuation wrong. . but some catching up of PDL's valuation would seem logical. The bearish trend of nearly a decade is showing signs of a reversal as good results in recent years (besting those of PDL) have have left Gem diamonds on a deeply discounted valuation when compared to peers. Who knows..could be the start of something. | weemonkey
21/4/2016 09:28 | I guess it just hit 19....... I'm happy owning both. | ukgeorge
20/4/2016 17:53 | UK George - PDL's pe of 18 to GEMD's pe of 5.4 is one hell of premium given that GEMD have consistently been more profitable over last 6 years. You would think that that gap will narrow at the very least. . What do I know. . . | weemonkey
20/4/2016 17:00 | I hold both PDL and GEMD, so would like both to rise. So yes Gemd may have made more money than Pdl in recent years, but pdl's growth profile is far better than gemd. Also gemd have previous in making catastrophic investments. So pdl probably deserves a premium to gemd. I'll be happy when both are trading closer to £2 a share. They both also hold risk so that's why I have not put all my eggs in one basket. Both closed at new recent highs today so tomorrow should be good. | ukgeorge
20/4/2016 16:54 | Excellent day today.. and good dividend on the way as well. | funtimejonny
20/4/2016 16:32 | There is a rebalancing of valuations going on. . . When you do the math and add up all the profits since 2010 for for Petra Diamonds and then Gem Diamonds well GEMD has made 20% - 30% more profit than PDL over the last 5 years. Yet it trades on 1/4 of PDL's valuation. That discrepancy is being sorted out. . | undervaluedassets
20/4/2016 12:29 | Come on GEMD, a little higher and hopefully we get the next leg up. | ukgeorge
19/4/2016 17:18 | interesting Panmure comments | tomatoma2
19/4/2016 12:43 | Consolidate for a week or so and then the next leg up :) 6p dividend next month as well | ukgeorge
15/4/2016 11:40 | Read Panmure's detailed quarterly report on the diamond sector including Gem Diamonds (GEMD), out this morning, by visiting hxxps://www.research “Gem Diamonds full year 2015 results exceeded our top of the range estimates and significantly beat wider market expectations. Annual dividend payments have been held at 5c despite weaker pricing trends in the diamond market last year. The company has also been able to announce an additional 3.5c pay-out arising from the settlement of a tax assessment. We reiterate…R | thomasthetank1
13/4/2016 16:13 | given similiar profitablity profile we should at least approach similiar valuation to Petra. long long way to go on that | weemonkey
12/4/2016 21:45 | Probably a mixture of the two aided by the fact that people are becoming aware that investment grade diamonds could have a real part to play as a mobile store of wealth. | woodpeckers
12/4/2016 21:15 | I think that the move is about good recent results and cheap valuation next to peers . . . pure and simple | undervaluedassets
12/4/2016 18:30 | Friday is the date for the Lesotho mining ministers decision for the shortlist for Mothae, looks like the market thinks Gem is in with a good chance. | woodpeckers |
