                         Main Board Director Retirement


Gaskell PLC ("Gaskell"), one of the UK's leading manufacturers of carpet tiles
and broadloom carpets, today confirmed that Ted Andrew will retire from the
Board with effect from 30 September 2002.

As previously announced and in accordance with the Group's succession plans, Ted
stepped down as Chairman at the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting in May
2002, and was succeeded by Alan Chamberlain. Ted has remained on the Board since
May as a Non-Executive Director.

Ted joined the Main Board of Gaskell in 1971 and had been Chairman of the Group
since 1982.

Alan Chamberlain, Non-Executive Chairman, Gaskell PLC commented:

"Ted has made a significant contribution to the development of Gaskell over the
years. I would like to take this opportunity to thank him personally, and on
behalf of the Board and all the staff, for his long service and wholehearted
