"At long last it looks like we are going to get the results of the UK Onshore round of licencing this week which may well even include some fast track fraccing into the bargain. Good news for IGas and Egdon and obviously Big Jim Ratcliffe who may have joined this party just at the right time…"

Good posts.

Government has a vested interest in seeing fracking and drilling progress to fruition.
It will happen. Load up now.

Cheers Foxyou, worth printing, I hope the weasels at Lancs council who rejected Quadrilla, against the advice of their own officers, and who will happily fork out tax payers money on the appeal, get egg all over their faces, they are a disgrace:-

FRACKING applications will be fast-tracked through the planning system under new rules intended to kick-start the shale gas revolution.

The guidance, to be issued this week, will strengthen the power of ministers to step in and wrest decisions from local authorities if planners are perceived to be obstructive.

While the government is braced for a row with environmental campaigners, local government leaders and some MPs over the plans, ministers have become frustrated at the failure to get the UK fracking industry off the ground.

An application by the shale gas firm Cuadrilla to drill wells on the Fylde coast was rejected by Lancashire county council in June, more than a year after it was first submitted.

Amber Rudd, the energy secretary, said this weekend that the UK could not afford to miss out on billions of pounds in revenue and the 60,000 new jobs that the technology could potentially create.

Writing in The Sunday Times, Rudd said: “We need more secure, home-grown energy supplies and shale gas must play a part . . . We can’t continue with a system that sees applications dragged out for months, or even years on end which doesn’t give certainty to industry and which could spell the end of a potentially vital national industry.”

Planning authorities generally fail to meet a target to process environmentally sensitive applications in 16 weeks or less.

Cuadrilla faces a further delay of up to two years after appealing against Lancashire council’s decision. Ministers fear other firms will be put off submitting fracking applications until the case is resolved.

In the guidance, which is to be issued by Greg Clark, the communities secretary, local authorities will be told: “There is an urgent need to explore and develop our shale gas and oil resources in order to unlock their potential benefits and to help meet our objectives for secure energy supplies, economic growth and lower carbon emissions.”

The rules will make it easier for the communities secretary to hear appeals such as Cuadrilla’s. Interventions are rare but may become more common as the government presses the case for shale gas.

Ministers are also preparing to award gas and exploration licences within weeks. Rudd has said she will grant licences in the 14th onshore round — which attracted 95 bidders in 295 areas — in two stages to speed things up.

Green campaigners argue that fracking, which involves pumping water and chemicals into the ground at high pressure to release gas trapped in shale deposits, is dangerous and can cause pollution.

The practice was halted in the UK four years ago after minor earthquakes near Blackpool, Lancashire, were attributed to test wells being drilled by Cuadrilla.

Rudd said the communities where fracking takes places would benefit from operators handing them more than 1% of the proceeds, up to £10m.

“Getting shale exploration up and running is a key part of our long-term plan to build a stronger . . . economy, create jobs by backing the industries of the future and take our country forward,” she said.

Posted by pactrol on the LSE site:-

"Does anyone else find it a strange arrangement where the government is selling Oil Exploration Licences to Oil Companies yet Allows the Local council planning Depts to then block their use. resulting in expensive & time consuming Appeals. if the government are selling licences then shouldn't they come with pre approved planning. & put an end to all this nonsense."
