12/5/2010 14:29 | very good trading statement... I would appreciate any brokers notes that can be posted (even though I could probably write them myself... their guess is as good as mine!) but an ATH in these markets must be a good omen. | eipgam

29/3/2010 09:51 | Compass Group releases its pre-close trading update on the last day of the month and the market will be looking to see whether the company's organic growth has made the transition from not declining so sharply to actually improving on a year on year comparative basis. The group said in February that organic revenue improved from a decline of approximately 3% in the fourth quarter of 2009, to a decline of 1.7% in the first quarter of this year, with all four of its geographic regions ahead quarter on quarter. | eipgam

23/3/2010 21:40 | At its present level it is tempting to take a profit. I don't know quite why it is so strong atm but could be connected with forex considerations due to its foreign currency income stream. A UK target inflation rate of ~2% means the country is forever attempting to walk up a currency down escalator with that target speed. The budget will merely determine whether the escalator speeds up or not - the expectation before a looming election being that it may speed up dramatically as the chancellor fails to grasp any nettles. (Analogy to the pound plummetting.) The advantage of sundry foreign incomes is that they bypass the UK escalator but are on different ones without the UK's particular virile combination of adverse factors accelerating them. Hence, CPG is reckoned as a (relatively) safe haven and will have the advantage of apparently increased profit in translation from dollars etc. PS: I now recall that CPG has closed its defined benefit pension scheme to further accruals. This must be viewed as a positive measure, partly in cost (it will continue with contributions to a different employee scheme), but more particularly in relation to risk control. | boadicea
23/3/2010 17:45 | So... a week later and you haven't sold. Just as well really.... btw, I think the only real effect the budget will have is people selling beforehand (ie over the last week or two) in an effort to minimise CGT liability. Although the govt have said that CGT will not change, if I remember correctly | eipgam
23/3/2010 16:01 | no not that many .. but want to bank some profit .. dont know what kind of effect the budget will have on markets.... | dawntrader

15/2/2010 15:19 | Charles Stanley's 10 best share ideas for 2010 Compass Group- Net debt was reduced last year despite losses on currency and acquisition spend. Margins rose on cost-cutting measures and 'we expect further margin increases and once volumes improve it should provide further operational leverage to profitability. Ongoing structural growth in food service outsourcing 'could add 5% revenue growth in 2011.' | eipgam

28/1/2010 12:25 | Legal & General Growth manager Robert Churchlow, who is Citywire A-rated, believes it is rare to find quality growth stories that are not highly rated by the market. 'We look for companies offering genuine growth, but where the market is less convinced by their prospects,' Churchlow said. He therefore includes some turnaround situations within his Garp stock picks, including catering contractor Compass Group. 'In addition to top-line growth, margin improvement has come from the new management team, which is running the company better. The stock market has not fully appreciated what is going on with the company,' he said. | eipgam
12/1/2010 16:09 | Four shares to capitalise on a strengthening dollar Compass: The catering company generates around 40% of 2009 revenue from the US and Carr calculates a 5% rise in the value of the dollar would have added £13million to operating profit or 2.3% to EPS. The stock also benefits from potential margin upside, cyclical recovery potential, structural growth in outsourcing and a strong free cash flow which is not yet reflected in the shares, Morgan Stanley analysts believe. | eipgam

16/12/2009 10:30 | Deutsche Bank upped its stance on Compass to "buy" from "hold". The broker said Compass had performed better than Sodexo, its French peer, and had a more certain medium-term outlook. The company was also the subject of some comment from HSBC. "There is no denying that Compass has set up a drastic, extremely effective cost-cutting programme enabling it to report the best margins [across the sector], but it has also pared back its sales force and fallen behind in securing future growth," HSBC said, initiating the stock with a "neutral" rating. | miata
