STOCKS NEWS EUROPE-UBS sees pickup in U.S. M&A into Europe

Emerson Electric Co's (EMR.N) $1.1 billion tilt at Britain's Chloride Group Plc (CHLD.L) could herald a pick-up in European mergers and acquisitions (M&A) by faster-recovering U.S. companies, UBS analysts say in a research note.

Market Movers

U.S. companies are growing in confidence, have cut debt, cannot repatriate cash without big tax bills, and often see Europe as a "home from home" that already makes up a large chunk of revenues, UBS says.

UBS tips Carphone Warehouse Plc (CPW.L), Croda International Plc (CRDA.L), Invensys Plc (ISYS.L), Meggitt Plc (MGGT.L), Smiths Group Plc (SMIN.L), Switzerland's Temenos Group AG (TEMN.S), Tullow Oil Plc (TLW.L) and Virgin Media (VMED.O) as "the best way to play" the theme.

Should be interesting to see if £2 resistance can be tested soon, what with the good news from the mobile phone sector coupled with the 1st BestBuy store opening at Thurrock.

Morgan Stanley says don't be put off by the corporate structure as it initiates coverage of the stock with an overweight recommendation and 235p a share price target. Broker adds: 'The newly demerged CPW entity may not have the most attractive corporate structure, but it offers investors direct exposure to three attractive growth stories: Best Buy Mobile's expansion in the US, Best Buy's rollout of 'Big Box' stores in Europe, and Virgin Mobile's expansion in France. If all three are successful, New CPW will likely deliver a five-year EPS
CAGR of above 35% - more than double that of any other stock we cover.

"With the giving of mobile phones almost synonymous with Christmas, Carphone Warehouse (LSE: CPW) is expected to ring in good festive numbers on Tuesday. In November, it said half-year results were well ahead of expectations. The demerger of the company into telecom services and handset retailing is expected to be completed by the end of March."

Trading statement very soon and breaking upwards ahead of it. Think these could be through the recent highs on the trading statement.
