04/1/2009 16:33 | Lyntwyn, Read that after the above post and i have been buying sub 90p and will add more @sub 90p i hope,as the Times says it has a very nice balance sheet and Talk Talk seems to now be going well in fact i got it a month ago and it beats BT on price and usage. So in theory 2009 ought to be good for CPW ! Edit.... And a war chess of 900 million and in the present climate that will go a long way so some good deals might be on the cards ! | puffin1
04/1/2009 14:48 | I dont know, but I do know that the Times listed CPW as a share to by for 2009! Carphone's shares fell more than 70% in 2008 and are now worth 95p. Not all the bad news is factored in but much of it has been - from the dismal retail environment to the question of whether co-founder David Ross will have to sell his holding. Despite this, Carphone starts 2009 with a healthy balance sheet: it is practically debt-free since it sold a 50% stake in its retail business to Best Buy for £1.1 billion last May and the p/e ratio is 8.4. Analysts see upside from a break-up of the broadband division Talk Talk - worth about £1 billion - from its retail stores even if a buyer cannot be found. The big "if" is how mobile and laptop sales perform in a recession, but with a strong balance sheet, which the company is already leveraging to secure more favourable terms from suppliers, plans to shut 100 smaller stores in 2009, and with £900m of banking facilities in place, Carphone is well-positioned to put up a good fight. | lyntwyn
