Broker snap: Nomura lifts Carphone target price
Date: Monday 30 Nov 2009

LONDON (ShareCast) - Carphone Warehouse pleased the market with better than expected interims last week but Nomura Securities was irked that the company did not provide an update to guidance on expected savings from its Tiscali purchase.

The broker is tipping that the company is underplaying synergy benefits from the integration of Internet service provider (ISP) Tiscali into the TalkTalk broadband arm. Nomura thinks Carphone Warehouse will upgrade the cost savings by one third from current guidelines of £40m - £50m.

Encouragingly, Carphone Warehouse did 'confirm that the broadband pricing environment was improving, big-box roll-out was on track and that the demerger is scheduled for end of March 2010.'

All four events could lead to increase demand for the shares and accordingly the company has lifted its target price from 240p to 245p, while retaining its 'buy' recommendation.

Outlook
"The Group's strong half year progress, in profitability in both TalkTalk Group
and Best Buy Europe means we are increasing guidance for Headline EPS for the
current financial year to March 2010, to between 14.0p and 15.0p, the mid-point
of this range being above the current analyst consensus."

CARPHONE Warehouse, the mobile phone retailer, and storage group Big Yellow came under pressure yesterday as enterpreneur David Ross sold shares worth £75million.

Dealers said Ross sold about £39million worth of shares in Carphone, leaving him with £250 million worth of stock in the company he co-founded. He also sold his entire 9 per cent holding in Big Yellow for about £36million.

There were suggestions Ross needed to raise funds as he renegotiates loans taken out by his private property business Kandahar. He was forced to resign as a director of several companies including Carphone, down 3p to 168p, and Big Yellow, 25p adrift at 313p, after failing to let other board members know he had used his personal shareholdings as security.

Carphone and Vodafone reconnect
Duo are set to end a three-year dispute by resurrecting a sales agreement between the manufacturer and the store chainIain Dey
VODAFONE is set to end a three-year dispute with Carphone Warehouse by resurrecting a sales agreement with the mobile-phone store chain.

Talks between Charles Dunstone, the Carphone boss, and Vodafone's senior management are believed to be at an advanced stage, with an announcement expected imminently.

The deal would lead to Vodafone mobile contracts being sold in Carphone's 800 UK stores for the first time since 2006.

Vodafone ended a previous deal with Carphone and switched to an exclusive agreement with rival Phones4U, which committed to signing up 30,000 Vodafone customers a month.

Dunstone was shocked by the decision at the time, and suggested that Vodafone had walked away from the negotiating table too quickly.

Carphone's shares fell 14% on the day the contract loss was announced, with analysts estimating the chain could lose about £20m of annual earnings. The independent research house Arete predicted that the company's shares would halve in value.

Dunstone has remained in on-off talks with Vodafone about resurrecting the deal. Carphone never lost the contract to sell Vodafone's prepaid mobile phones.

Carphone's business model has radically changed since the previous deal was agreed. Dunstone has spun off his retail business into a joint venture with the American electrical retailer Best Buy. The new chain will sell consumer electronics as well as mobile phones. As part of the deal, Carphone has a profit-sharing agreement with Best Buy's American mobile business.

Dunstone has also created a large broadband internet business. Just days before losing the Vodafone contract, Carphone paid £370m to acquire AOL UK, the internet service provider. That business, rebranded Talk Talk, has now expanded into Britain's second-biggest broadband provider, thanks in part to its £236m acquisition last month of Tiscali UK.

Last week, Dunstone confirmed plans to demerge the two businesses by July 2010. They will be named Best Buy Europe and Talk Talk Group.

He also announced that the group had raised pretax profits to £133m in the year to March 2008, up from only £4m last year.

That is a great chart. I don't understand why there isn't more interest in this share. They bough Tiscali at a good price and should be able to continue to grow.

And they got it cheaper at £236 million than skys refused bid...

Sky is understood to have offered only about £300million or £350million, far short of the £500million to £600million Tiscali had demanded

new to this company / seems like the huge increase over last few days is reaction to budget re following in ft april 23
"Traders said renewable companies such as Clipper Windpower, up 16 per cent to 76p and Hansen Transmissions, 7 per cent better at 126¼p, were also Budget beneficiaries. In Wednesday's speech, the chancellor said £525m would be made available for investment for offshore wind as part of a wider £1.4bn low carbon recovery plan.

"This offshore wind announcement should reinvigorate the UK government's focus on extending its current lead in offshore wind generation," said broker Ambrian."

more to come?

It is certainly overdue and is about time but yes good news and I expect a certain amount of the good news will be in the seperation of the consumer business from the B2B and network side of the business......
