FTSE turns 40 - these are the stocks that have stood the test of time..

The index has taken on a less domestic and more international flavour over the past four decades, according to AJ Bell.

Of the 100 firms, just 26 of its founder members are still in the index.

This is split between 14 that even have the same name, although Whitbread, for example, is a different company now after shifting from breweries to becoming a hotel and restaurant group.

Whitbread helps JOHCM’s Reutter sleep easy

Whitbread (WTB) is enjoying strong demand for its hotel rooms and JOHCM fund manager Rachel Reutter is backing the return on capital it continues to generate.

Reutter holds the owner of the Premier Inn hotel chain, which is AAA-rated by Citywire Elite Companies, in her £128m JOHCM UK Opportunities fund.

In a recent update, she said the group was ‘still seeing strong demand for its hotels in the UK and Germany, with its popular value offering gaining share through hotel openings, customers trading down, and independent hoteliers exiting.’

In the first half of its financial year, UK accommodation sales were up 15% year-on-year which helped the group increase earnings by 37%.

‘Investment remains strong, with capex investment rising £100m more than previous guidance thanks to more freehold purchases and a new reservation system, all while group return on capital employed grew from 9% in first half 2023 to 12.6% in first half 2024,’ she said.

Shares in Whitbread added 0.5%, or 18p, to £33.72 yesterday. They have rallied 26% this year.

I often notice a share price rise on dividend payment dates, it's probably worth calculating the dividend and reinvesting the equivalent the day before.
