Tim, I am afraid there is quite a bit the headline statistics do not tell you.

I am sorry to say I am biased towards the way the Swedes have handled the virus.

O.K. the U.K. is not the same as Sweden - for one thing they do not have 'Spoons'!
The demographics are different and there is a high percentage of single households due to the divorce rate.

The government also set in stone if there is a pandemic the Chief Epidemiologist takes over.

It is a brave call by the Swedes, however I think they are going to be proved right as although their economy has and will suffer it will not suffer to the extent of the U.K.

If anyone is interested look up Dr Johan Giesecke the previous Chief Epidemiologist of Sweden as he has recently given an very interesting interview. It's on the net.

Slightly off thread but some interesting facts about how staggeringly low the death rate is in younger people compared with the elderly have come out this weekend and the amount of additional deaths caused by people not receiving the normal level of NHS care

Makes you wonder if the lockdown should have been more focused on older and more vulnerable people rather than everyone.

Spoons is going so well in Ireland currently because of there is little or no competition for prime, useful sites with gardens and bedrooms above etc. In the UK decent sites in decent locations have been too scarce. This could change things and open up some once in a generation site opportunities (a la Primark buying up the superb century old huge Woolworths site in Brighton before the glue on the closed banners had dried) some nice, big freeholds at bargain prices may be the silver lining

Creature, a year would not be so bad really.

Can 'Spoons' then grow?

Perhaps, surely in a recession, people go for the low cost option like they did with Aldi and Lidl over the 'big four' last recession.

The bets are off if it is a depression.

Will 'Spoons' go back to the same level of trade?

Not in the near future. In the same way that people don't want to take a summer holiday this year even if they are aloud to. People have been freaked out by the box in the living room. So I think it will take time to recover, maybe 1 year?

Essential, I think the share price is currently looking beyond the 'getting back to normal' although this might be a new normal.

If they can replicate last years' earning then fine. Then how is the market going to value those earnings.

This is very tough to call. What you have got is the £9.00 placing. Now did the clients of Investec get a bargain or will it look expensive in retrospect?

If I new the answer to that one I would either sell or add more!

It's not just a question of reopening, it's profitable reopening.

And the later may take longer than anticipated to get back near 2019 trading levels?.

Now may be that's allowed for in the current SP?, Or may be not.

So the real question is how does the furlough affect value?

Now does the P/E go down as people factor in another lock down in the 'dim and distant' or could Wetherspoons be the winner by picking up trade from permanently closed pubs not re-opened after the lock down.I think Essential made that point.

I am not saying that the closure period does not affect value. Obviously overheads have been reduced however they are still ticking.

Will 'Spoons' go back to the same level of trade?

Surely these are some of the important questions. Now I am not saying when they re-open fully or partially is not important mind.

Its possible blueball but I doubt it will be that long before pubs open in some form.

They can open next week subject to conditions in Spain and they have been very cautious and I dont think we are 5 months behind them.

Off-licences typically are specialist shops, convenience stores, parts of supermarkets, or attached to bars
and pubs. Prices are usually substantially lower than in bars or pubs.

Surprised GGL that did not do just that

I realise you know the pub industry and jdw better than I, BUT could pubs have been turned into partial temporary off licences like in the old days and delivery centries to off load excess inventories and thus honour supplier paynents and cover som overheads

Wetherspoon's bullish over Irish expansion plans despite pub crisis

British pub group JD Wetherspoon has no intention of rowing back on ambitious expansion plans for its Irish operations, despite mounting concern for the future of the bar industry in Ireland due to the forced social interaction changes brought about by the Covid-19 crisis.

I cannot see a lot of pubs being able to open in the way they did before until at least another year from now. Additionally Wetherspoons needs volume and has quite a few older customers.....not sure they will be much more than half full at best if opening some.
