Been watching on2 too marlin, but mainly for the contract news rather than the share price (which has risen to a similar extent to vds since recent lows) - video shares would seem to be 'hot' at the moment.

One thing about holding on2 compared to vds (if they both continue rising in a similar fashion) is that long-term holders pay 40% tax on profits on on2, rather than the 10% for an AIM company such as VDS after holding two years. Of course, need to make profit, or it's meaningless...

Xlantic Media and Vividas, the full-screen video streaming company, today announced the launch of "Song of Songs", the first major documentary video series exploring love, romantic relationships, and the changing landscape of commitment. This release makes "Song of Songs" one of the first independent feature films to be streamed at DVD-quality levels across the globe.

The-Pimp,
Agreed.
The deal just announced will convince some major players that Vividas is the real thing. I think it is only a matter of time now.

Steg,

Joost seems to be all hype from what I hear. Think they are throwing a lot on money at marketing with a relatively poor product.

Yep- looks as if some Journo has stolen your thunder!Forgotten where I got it but did a google blog search for vividas.

Film- yes are probably right. Looks more of a chick flick to me. The only thing I would say is that you can be suprised. The Secret is still getting 40,000 people watch it a month and I thought that wasn't exactly good. Vividas I think did that pretty much for free as it was a "proof of concept" thing. However I think, but am not entirely sure, they might be taking around £1 per viewing on this one which if say 15,000 people watch it per month would cover about 10% of cash burn which helps.

The real money will be if one of the major film studios put their back-dated library on this- goodbye to the DVD.

TV and film download websites 'not fast and reliable enough'

Katie Allen
Friday May 11, 2007
Guardian Unlimited

Despite a host of new websites offering TV and film downloads, many people are reluctant to use them as they aren't fast or reliable enough, according to a report out today.

Only 15% of internet users have downloaded a full-length TV programme and only 14% a whole movie, according to a survey by YouGov on behalf of CacheLogic, which runs a service distributing DVD-sized files over the web.

A typical movie could be around 700MB, depending on its length and how it is compressed. This would take around 45 minutes to download over a standard 2MB broadband connection, but a user could be able to start watching after a few minutes once enough data has been downloaded and buffered.

Despite this poor take-up, the survey of 2,400 UK internet users suggests the conventional wisdom that a video-on-demand service must be available on the traditional living room TV to be successful may be mistaken.

It found most internet users would watch video-on-demand on their computers if performance and quality were improved.

When asked to imagine a video on demand service that worked "quickly and easily", two thirds of respondents said they would be "fairly interested" or "very interested" in using it. Just 13% were "not at all interested".

There have been a series of new web TV services - many of them offering downloads, some streaming - announced and launched in recent weeks.

The BBC last week received the go-ahead to launch its iPlayer service, offering seven-day catch-ups. Commercial television giant ITV is to launch a video-on-demand service within weeks.

Meanwhile, the founders of Skype have started web TV company Joost, which this month rolled out its full commercial service offering 150 channels of ad-supported TV online. Joost offers the promise of watching real-time TV on a computer, through a "peer-to-peer" service that lets users access video streams from each other -- thus avoiding central servers which can become a bottleneck.

On the film front, internet and telephone provider Tiscali has launched a video-on-demand service offering feature-length downloads from 99p.

Market Report Extract

Vividas Group

In the small cap sector Vividas Group PLC (VDS) announced it has signed its largest ever annual contract with one of the 'top three major film studios in the US', to stream all trailers from their 2007 film release schedule and rose 15% as a result. No financial details were given. Trailers will be streamed using the company's VivStream Campaign, studios will thus be able to stream movies in high definition quality at a much lower bandwidth. The deal is supposed to be confidential but I can reveal that it is with Sony. Why can I reveal this ? Am I mad? Am I a foolish fellow? Am I an ace reporter ? No, the reason I can reveal it is that it has already been revealed by Vividas itself, here : - the clue is in the File Name ! Confidentiality not too impressive but no doubt their streaming video technology is better.

Video over the Internet is becoming increasingly important so I will be keeping an eye on Vividas - there is also the possibility that it will become a takeover target at some point in the future (you heard it here first !).

"Vividas is a video streaming technology company - their products enable media owners to distribute secure video content over the web in HD that play without the need to stop and buffer and without the need to download a player to a computer's hard drive. "

The chart shows some long-term resistance at 93p-ish but long-term it seems like it's got good prospects.

You can see the excellent quality of their video streaming here :

The online entertainment market is experiencing massive growth, and Vividas has, today, at last landed the contract it deserves of 'significant value' against the technically far inferior technology of Microsoft Real Player and Adobe Flash. These have, nevertheless, through shows, presentations sales forces and much larger budgets, been able to swamp the market and till now win the large contracts as from the BBC, BT,etc from the still small but talented VDS sales team.

Telegraph comment:
Shares in online video developer Vividas rose by 16pc today after the company said it had secured an important contract with a leading US film studio - believed to be Sony Pictures - to stream the trailers for all of its releases this year.

The Aim-listed company, which produces technology that enables broadcast-quality video to be streamed over the internet, said that this latest deal represented its "largest ever annual contract."

Vividas has worked with Sony on numerous occasions in the past, providing the platform for previews of films such as Spiderman 3 to be broadcast over the internet.

Paul Neville, Vividas chief executive, said "this is a ground-breaking agreement, combining as it does a highly prestigious customer and a significant contractual value."

"The online entertainment market is experiencing massive growth and Vividas is well placed to capitalise on the ever increasing consumer demand for high quality streamed content," he added.

Vividas says that its products allow film studios to stream movies and trailers in high definition quality while using a much lower bandwidth than its competitors, thereby making it cheaper for them to transmit and quicker for users to download.

Vividas' shares rose from a low of around 25p in January to a high of more than 90p in April, before falling back in advance of today's recovery.

The stock climbed by 11p to 80.5p today, giving the company a market value of £26m.

At the start of May, Vividas announced a deal to stream video for Thomson Holidays and signalled its desire to sign more annual contracts in order to boost underlying revenue.

But it said that negotiations were taking longer than expected and that as a result "there will be a modest shortfall in turnover against market expectations for the year to June 30, although net loss and cash will be in line with market expectations".
