Shorting any financial instrument is a hotly debated topic - a much larger(in value terms)though lower profile argument has been taking place for years over investors buying credit default swaps (debt insurance) when they don’t own the company’s underlying debt, which is similarly a bearish bet on a company’s future.

With AIM shares shorting rules investors have to be careful what they ask for. MMs provide liquidity and a part of that is the ability to short shares temporarily. Regulation and enforcement of any MM shorting rules should be very straightforward so just requires a threat of heavy fines from the FCA.

What is much more difficult is policing unregulated concerted shorting and ramping by groups of traders. This is where the regulators need to invest some time and resources to make examples of what amounts to creating disorderly markets. The VRS example in February is just one of several examples that could and should be investigated.

Not all shorting is bad as it exposes some very dubious companies and individuals too numerous to mention here but it’s not the going short that bothers me so much, it’s the methods employed to force share prices down that need a thorough investigation. Clearly any organised activity involving inside information is criminal and needs looking at further.

The main purpose of capital markets is to provide funding for businesses and the secondary markets act as a live validation of these companies’ activities. Anything that maliciously distorts these markets ultimately affects the economy in several ways and needs to be sat on heavily.

AIMHO etc.

Hyundai carbon fibre frame here pc from 2015. Best ellis

"Axontex™ frame wins top European prize with Hyundai."

12/02/2015

Axon Automotive are winners of the 2015 Jury Prize at the European Composites show JEC Paris. Hyundai have led the project with Korean manufacturers Hyosung and Lotte Chemicals collaborating with Axon to produce the Intrado crossover vehicle which is hydrogen powered. First seen at the Geneval motorshow in 2014 the Intrado’s all carbon fibre frame is the subject of the JEC prize. Axon’s Founder, Dr Steven Cousins says, “The combination of state of the art hydrogen powertrain and superlight all carbon fibre body structure make this vehicle a strong candidate for the world’s most advanced green car”.

The Intrado is powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain with a potent 36-kWh lithium-ion battery. Total range is roughly 370 miles on a single fill-up, from Hyundai’s advanced fuel cell system.

Hyundai claim that the new manufacturing and joining processes for the Intrado's lightweight carbon-fiber structure has "the potential to change the way cars are made." The automaker goes on to say that the Intrado's strong bones could accommodate body panels made from "any material," giving designers much more flexibility. Hyundai claim the Intrado has responsive and agile driving dynamics, thanks to its low weight and efficient powertrain.

Axon Automotive is proud to have worked with Hyundai's European Technical Centre to create the Axontex™ based all carbon fibre vehicle frame that has helped this vehicle become such a trail blazer."

Tunghsu are working on graphene related batteries for vehicles.

It was said at GEIC that Gnanomat were working with 2 names on batteries but since the link up with VRS 2 has become 5.

A fair chance Tunghsu is one of them imo.

The one major I suspect Gnano are with is very vocal on the topic.

Was in the Tesla Showroom in Edinburgh the other day - Two beautiful top of the range models on display - Incredibly heavy vehicles though- 3 Tonne plus if I remember right - Also on display was the stripped down Chassis - lovely piece of engineering - Pure aluminium throughout and featuring the large underseat well for storing the Titanium protected lithium batteries - Interesting to see where these vehicles will be in a few years time - Never see much on lightweighting batteries - Can graphene help there? - might be able to dispense with the Titanium as well - Wouldnt like to see a Lithium/Aluminium fire after an accident in one of these - Fairly spectacular though you might think

Scrutable re the FCA

Just to show the guys here how bad it is. I will leave out names.

I hear staff of a certain nomad shorted stock on a company they were aware (their client) was about to fund raise.

Funnily enough names we see here and on other threads supposedly shorted it too.

So if true, it would be fair to say the same bunch have probably done it repeatedly.

Hence with the Haydale fiasco I have used that as a catalyst to try and pry the lid off a can of worms in the direction of the FCA.

I believe others have already made allegations.

As you can imagine it’s serious allegations with potential severe consequences for those involved.

Nice that they unwittingly put ‘things’ on various social media sites to link themselves to the crimes.

In this article, a 3D printed aluminium part weighs less than conventional plastic, and is stiffer. You'd think more expensive though ? I wonder if polygrene could shift the dynamics here; ie it is lighter, but as stiff as the aluminium alloy ? Possibly less expensive? Either way, in EV's lightweighting becomes key for extending battery range. Aimo. Best ellis

13th November 2018, Munich

'A million components for BMW.'(3D printed).

"...The window guide rail is the second 3D-printed component in the BMW i8 Roadster. The first was the fixture for the soft-top attachment, which is also produced at the centre in Munich. Made of aluminium alloy, the metal component weighs less than the injection-moulded plastic part that is normally used but is still considerably stiffer. Its importance has already been recognised with an Altair Enlighten Award in the category for Modules this year. The accolade honours lightweight innovations in the field of subsystems and components...."

Posting on heavily populated threads, stock by stock, is worthwhile and effective - but it does also need a dedicated thread - with a title that says more than just 'Ban shorting - Petition' - it needs to clearly indicate that it's a formal government petition, in the title.

The petitition is a great idea whose time is come, though the number of active, private shareholders is almost certainly much lower than one thinks. The necessary numbers will be difficult to mobilise,

The banks have always shoveled private invesors towards funds and bonds to benefit The City.. That's more in the bank' interest than it is in ours but it would be wondrous if we could slow our many years of descent to banana republic level. The Brexiteers early actions after liberation from EU controls will be to undercut tariffs and International taxation, conceal the movement of dodgy capital, and imitate Singapore, Panama, Cyptus, Cayman islands etc in a race to the bottom. They will strongly support shorting.

The City loves the hedge funds, who do most of the shorting. Shorting adds volume, and the income that mms and brokers make out of the spreads generated by volatility and the dreadful, artificial spikes. They will defend shorting tenaciously though it constantly erodes PI's capital, and is therefore totally immoral. But when has morality ever determinded actions in The City?

That's one reason why Brexit has been so strongly supported by Established Wealth . The City hates the delegated rights of EU officials to thwart sculduggery. Look how much we have gained from EU discipline in food labelling. I will, tell you of the food scams I encountered in the industry before we joined the EU -,but that's for another day. The FCA is a window dressing farce and has allowed literally dozens of scoundrels to raise money on AIM, spend it and lose it without batting an eyelid, ,let alone penalising anyone, or taking action to learn from every perpetrated scam.
