sandbag, I know Llanelli, I have a close relative who lives there and works in the top end of media and earns a lot of his living from government support for the Welsh language, so I need to declare an interest.

If any one who comes to the AGM and talks to my brother who also worked in Wales and lives in Cardiff (ran his own animation company - remember 'Super Ted') he can tell you how corrupt the whole Welsh language / government deal is.

In short - my argument is not being made from a position of ignorance (or hopefully bias)

Best wishes - Spike

Re: "Of no practical use"? You could say the same of all the great cultural gifts of music painting and literature but they actually give meaning to peoples otherwise mean lives.

20th Sept 2018: Yesterday The Telegraph reported that BBC Radio Cymru, which receives £13.5m of licence fee money, is having to play English language music to fill airtime after it failed to reach an agreement with Welsh musicians over royalty payments.

The Welsh artists want to be paid around ten times the current rate every time one of their songs is aired.

Comment: to be fair, they should only be paid five times as much given that only around 20% of Welsh can speak Welsh. AND we don't actually know if any of those musicians can speak Welsh, but presumably they can play music with a - cough - Welsh accent.

Sorry totally un-called for. Head hanging in shame
Best wishes - Spike

Not just over the border, think it is the crux of all things, once a country loses its identity its fekked!! Name me a country that hasn't then you get worried for the true old world.

Overheard a couple of Chinese business men the other day. "Why don't we learn Welsh?" they said. That'll come in handy.

Weildy2 - was her study material in Welsh, will all here future medical knowledge be English based or Welsh based. Are there ANY internationally recognised scientific media (such as 'Nature' magazine) published in Welsh.

The fact that she had to take her Hypocratic Oath in Welsh is exactly my point. A Welsh government that is driving - at tax payers expense - a desire to have Wales be a minority country with a minority language, at a time when very many countries (such as China) are spending billions on teaching their pupils to speak English.

Spike_1. One of my daughters studied medicine at Cardiff University and had to take the Hypocratic Oath in Welsh when she graduated.

music and painting are not affected by the use or otherwise of a minority language which is being part funded by tax payers. Literature is affected, and one can debate whether the cost of converting the word's best literature into Welsh, and Welsh into English is a fair deal for tax payers.

Romantic views of a minority language are just fine, but if we have to translate everything else (of value) into that language so that it can be used, is in my mind a difficult argument given that the vast majority of people in Wales don't speak Welsh (around 80%).

Dai was watching a Six Nations game in Cardiff. In the packed stadium there was only one empty seat, right next to him."Whose is that seat?" asked a man in the row behind."I got the ticket for my wife," said Dai. "But she died in an accident.""So you're keeping the seat vacant as a mark of respect?""No," said the fan, "I offered it to all of my friends.""So why didn't they take it?""They've all gone to the funeral."

Spike - let me guess, you voted Leave.

"there is no money tree to fund everything"

you're wrong - there IS a magic money tree, composed of derivatives and speculative instruments, and Philip May's and Rees-Moseley's (and many other) hedge funds harvest it every day.

Back onto the filter list with you.

lucky: if Neill speaks competent Welsh, I'll withdraw my comments. If he doesn't it rather supports my case don't you think.
