29/4/2007 19:02 | Market forces Richard Wachman Sunday April 29, 2007 The Observer Bid engineered for Tomkins Now that Boots is falling to KKR, who next for private equity? Among the retailers, Halfords, Debenhams and Woolworths are frequently mentioned. Within the industrial sector, the focus is on engineering group Tomkins, apparently being sized up by a private equity firm willing to pay 350p a share. The group has two distinct businesses: construction equipment and car components - making it an ideal break-up candidate. | lbo
22/2/2007 13:13 | UBS Broker have a buy recommendation on Tomkins as of today, with a 310p price target. | haywards26
18/2/2007 15:29 | Dassera Product volume is falling (both housing and cars), margins must be under pressure from end users (car manufacturers and housebuilders), raw materials costs are increasing and the dollar is likely to continue to fall. Not the best macro scenario to be operating in but I agree a well run nimble company probably can still outperform. I am also expecting a general fall in market indices. All things considered I would be surprised to see much of a rally in Tomkins over the next 9 months. | pdt
17/2/2007 18:25 | Had a look at 240p not long ago and rallied strongly - your comments re big auto and US housing are now consensus - maybe a well-run company might have a chance of surprising to the upside in this scenario - as you say, PDT, time will tell. | dassera
17/2/2007 12:29 | I have taken a small short on this one. 75% of the business in the US, exposure to the big auto makers and the housing market. Chrysler shedding 13,000 workers and housing starts falling 14% doesn't bode well for the coming year and I can't see the dollar performing well. Even the company expects a tough 2007 but the shares are the same level as 12 months ago. Perhaps an already low PE and bid speculation will keep them supported. I'm looking for a fall to 240 over the next 9 months. Time will tell. | pdt
