My friend is an egg producer. He has a shed full of eggs, if he sells them to the supermarkets, he will make a loss. The cost of feed and heating has gone up.The supermarkets have raised the prices of eggs but are paying the producers the same, blaming avian flu for supply issues.

Logan, as I have said before, there is a ceiling for the Aldi/Lidl market share. In some countries they are closing stores where the ceiling has been reached.

In this new world perhaps we are far off from the ceiling in the U.K.

I would not be surprised by 2025 Aldi/Lidl combined having between 20% and 22% market share in the UK.

Trev, I am absolutely not confident.

I can see that Aldi and Lidl are taking bites out of the 'not so big four' as we speak.

Trev they are working on reducing costs.

I do think their absolute buying power will help.

It's tough out their mind.

The margin here is so low that next year it’s going to bite hard a cunning plan is needed and quick they have always managed to do it in the past so let’s hope!

Shortage of my favourite white wine - Cote de Gascoigne as well.

When it is in and on Clubcard Prices it is a great bargain.

When it comes to 'real money,' there is no inflation...

In 1964 a gallon of gas in the U.S. cost a 1/4 or 25cents and U.S. coins in those days were 90% silver. Today in 2022 a 1964 1/4 will still buy a gallon of gas.....therefore in real money a gallon of gas in the U.S. cost the same today as it did in 1964.

In my local Tesco, if one goes in after midday often as much as 2/3rds of the fruit and veg have gone as not getting enough in.

Like what v1 posted - any spare space is full of chocolate and on offer booze.

There was in my Teco yesterday, Donald only a few organic eggs there.
No bananas either.
But there's enough chocolate and booze to keep the country content for months.

Number of stores and % market share is a variable depending on who you listen to, in addition stores open and shut according to market forces. Just good to know Tesco's is way ahead as market leader.
We are in the early days of very difficult times financially, Tesco's caters for most people in their basic range, ordinary range and deluxe range making it easy for shoppers to cut costs by stepping to a cheaper version of their usual shop.
I rather expect alcohol sales to grow as folk cut down on eating and drinking outside of the home,to home entertainment. ie a Tesco curry + a few bevvies at home with a couple of friends.

Presumably kantar refer to sales while sfs' post refers to number of outlets?

swallow - According to Kantar Tesco has 27.0% market share, however Kantar never includes M&S which currently has 3.6% market share which Nielsen does. Therefore in reality Tesco market share is more like 26%, I've seen it reported as low as 25.6% market share.

According to some sources -

880 Lidi stores, 7.1% of market
967 Aldi stores, 9.3% of market
Tesco 1966 convenience/small stores, 798 large stores, 28.4% of market
1405 Sainsburys stores, 14.9% of market
332 Waitrose stores, 5.1% market
Marks and Spencers has 1059 stores across the UK, including 615 that only sell food 3.2% of market.
Co-op/Somerfield have 3000 stores, 8% of market

Given the price of petrol that could also affect how far shoppers want to travel for shopping.
Marks and Spencers and Co-op are potentially the most vulnerable of these shops on price.
My local Lidi (approximately 6 miles away) has a limited variety of goods, my main local Tesco's (approximately 1 mile away) is now a superstore and has a massive selection of goods. Local Tesco convenience store 1/4 mile away is almost as big as the local co-op store. If i happen to be in the Lidi area might pop in to see what prices are like and if there is anything i want to buy, Tesco's is my preferred shop.

Thought Lidi and Aldi weren't into home delivery as Tesco and Sainsburys were losing money on them.
Could see a bit of a market slide as inflation was expected to be 10.7 and it was 11.1
Although Jeremy Hunt mini budget was encouraging.

Logan, how about the Waitrose/Ocado folk who are moving over to Tesco?

Now a YouGov poll has shown that one in six shoppers have switched their main supermarket because of the ongoing cost of living crisis – with switchers most likely to have abandoned Tesco while 41% switching to Aldi and 24% to Lidl.

Aldi boss Giles Hurley said "Customers are prioritising value like never before and switching their shopping to Aldi."
