Now a YouGov poll has shown that one in six shoppers have switched their main supermarket because of the ongoing cost of living crisis – with switchers most likely to have abandoned Tesco while 41% switching to Aldi and 24% to Lidl.

Aldi boss Giles Hurley said "Customers are prioritising value like never before and switching their shopping to Aldi."

Might indirectly lead to less pointless wastage. Hope it doesn't stop excess product going to food banks, although they should get new product, not left overs.

We're lucky, we've got 2 vegetable shops near us that buy from the wholesale market, so just buy a load of potatos, stick them in a dark bag in the shed and they last for ages. Same with most other vege. In the "good old days" we used to go in the car to the local farm and buy a sack to last months. Horror of horrors the potatos were covered in dirt, which we had to wash off. What a liberty !

Always wondered why, amongst all the complicated labelling, there isn't a place for a skull and crossbones on products.

ie. to differentiate between those that will taste a bit off and those that will actually cause you harm.

We just threw away some chilli sauce as it was way past sell by date. We've been using it for months. Was it actually dangerous at all ? I have no idea. Similarly salad dressings of various types etc. etc.

All businesses are quite rightly expected to make a profit, including energy companies, hardily their fault that price of energy went through the roof.

Unfortunately, it is too easy to expect businesses to foot the bill, just as it is too easy to blame the causes of poverty on those who are poor.

There are businesses that are poorly run, just as there are households that are poorly run, both are likely to run up debts that they cannot pay.

I invested in Tesco's because i think they have the ability to correctly gauge the direction the market is going and take appropriate action.

While the impact of covid, Ukraine war and Brit-exit have all had an adverse impact on food prices, i suspect that the changing environment has had the biggest impact on food prices and will continue to do so. I'm not sure where that leaves supermarkets as they are already intensely competitive. Shop lifting in supermarkets i guess will become a growth business. The area i live in did have the most profitable Tesco's in the country (might still be the most profitable) because it is a wealthy area and has a lack of local supermarkets. It recently expanded the store and sells items other than food and alcohol. That new area is also doing very well as there is also a lack of choice and reasonably priced local clothes shops. I rather think that Tesco will keep abreast of the best direction to head in and will follow the 'Which' report recommendations. However, due to circumstances beyond Tesco's control we will have a growing number of people who must go to food banks for help as buying food is going to be unattainable for them, those in need will be those who can afford food but have to cut back on buying Tesco's 'finest' products and buy more of their 'basic' products, I have noticed in my area that more cheaper products are being bought and that more people are paying with cash rather than card and the food bank box does not seem to overflow as it use to (could just be is getting emptied more frequently ?)
I think Tesco is smart enough to move with the times and over the next few years increase their share of the market.

The 'Which' report wants supermarkets to help struggling consumers and commit to take further actions on:

🛒Availability of affordable, healthy food
🛒Clear pricing
🛒 More offers for those in need
