We all know what a double blind trial is

A double blind trial is a trial where neither the researchers nor the patients know what they are getting. The computer gives each patient a code number. And the code numbers are then allocated to the treatment groups. Your treatment arrives with your code number on it.

I presume the legend to interpret the numbers is locked somewhere till the end.

An ethical question based on this

"They would receive either SNG001 or placebo once daily for 14 days".

Now, we have somebody administering the mysterious pill every day for 14 days and we have nurses and doctors following the patients.

Do the carers that daily look after and monitor the patients know that there is a trial going on?

Regardless of whether they do or not, they will just use their observational skills and notice any significant improvements.

They will talk with each other etc.

Are the scientists, ie the guys that are conducting the study being excluded all the time for 14 days from what is happening?

And finally, from an ethical point of view, if a significant number (let's forget numbers, chi-square etc., just let's call it a large %) is showing rapid and great progress and others are actually worsening, don't you think that the study should be stopped a bit earlier, checked the correlation and, if positive and "reasonably" significant all the worsened patients found to be on placebo should be given IFNbeta immediately.
I am a former scientist and I amn aware this is very empirical, unorthodox and probably not good practice. But, what would you do?

You only human to feel this, and 'money' is not everything for most of us. It does not mean we just switch off.
We all want an end to this crisis, and its so sad to hear of those succumbing.
I dont think you will find anyone who wishes other drug trials fail.

Stay safe and GL
