so i am not completely alone... the figures are not inspiring, perhaps, but look at what they mean. the depreciation of the tenge and the fall in cement prices due to a stalling construction industry have led to a fall in turnover but at the same time cement sales have risen. ie stcm has taken a larger share of a reduced market. apply this to the year to come, as the kazakh internal economy comes back to life and stcm has an increased share of a growing market with the price of cement picking up again.

Preliminary Update for the year ended 31 December 2009

Steppe Cement Ltd ("Steppe Cement") recorded turnover for the year ended 31
December 2009 of KZT 8,737 million from cement sales totaling 930,297 tonnes.
This compares with KZT 11,012 million and cement sales of 807,300 tonnes for the
year ended 31 December 2008.

Steppe Cement expects to release its full results and audited accounts in April 2010.

Not inspiring today ... t/o down on rising cement sales volumes. share price held up well i thought, esp the final 400k tranche that seems to have been sold at 1p over the bid ... high selling volume but virtually no change

i was pointed in the direction of this stock by someone who knows kazakhstan and after doing a bit of research - not that easy, true - i am astonished that there is so little interest in it. it is a large cheap producer of cement in kazakhstan. for the last year or two that hasn't meant much but as the kazakh economy continues to revive - which it will as long as oil, copper, uranium etc prices don't plummet again - and construction picks up in the country stcm will be in clover. apart from anything else the world bank and others are funding a new silk road through the heart of kazakhstan - a land route for chinese exports to reach europe. what will the service stations, shopping centres etc along this road be built from? plus the likelihood of the appreciation of the tenge over the next year, which will benefit steppe. less than two years ago steppe was above 300p. there has been one smallish share issue since then with little likelihood of more needed as it is already on the way back to profit and has no new big capital needs and a serviceable debt level. my source suggests a reasonable expectation for the share price in a couple of years time is 500p. it is 70p now. a comparison might be the prospects of west china cement a year ago. if there is anyone out there on this thread i'd be grateful if you could tell me whether i have missed something. i asked about it on wcc when i first heard about it and was gently dismissed but after more research i can't find a catch, other than there is likely to be a bit of a wait, as long of course as the world economy doesn't collapse again.

Was waiting for it too ForestO but obviously sub 60p was the level not 50p.

Looks like we both missed the boat on that one!!

Perhaps long-term value is starting to re-emerge if the share price goes under 50p.

forest, for some reason this is just not grabbing my attention, not that much news around on Kazakhstan cement producers. The company seems to be trying to find itself with plenty of issues to put right, keeping costs down plus issues with the currency.
For those in early putting the issues right should prove very worthwhile, if the government don't interfere with capping prices, however it's not for me at the moment, will look back in the next update.

Does anyone on this board know anything about the Kazakh government taking control of the cement price in the country as of 20th July?

I found this and other similar reports.

From Kazakhstan Today

13:20 20.07.2009 Government of Kazakhstan took cement price under control

Astana. July 20. Kazakhstan Today - The government of Kazakhstan took the price for cement under control. The chairman of Agency for Competition Protection of Kazakhstan, Mazhit Esenbaev, informed at the government selector session, the agency reports.

"We had some concerns connected with the price for cement, which, in my opinion, has unreasonably increased," the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Karim Masimov, said.

Director bought £375,000 of shares at £1 each in February, and more since. I suspect there is M&A activity on the horizon. It looks like most of this rise has been caused by a big buyer mopping up stock and willing to bid it higher.

I think interest in Kazakhstan may have increased in connection with announced restructuring plans for the big Kazakh banks like BTA.

Get the Kazakh banking sector restructured and local banks will start lending again, local companies will start investing again and so local demand for cement should rise and Steppe profits too

Good start and again big trades at the offer. This could go to 100p with little effort IMO. Doesn't seem to be on radar screens yet, but another day or two like this should bring some attention
