Maybe he thinks he could use them as colateral in a takeover bid, such as Debenhams for example. Maybe he just wanted to get the controlling stake under board control so no one could launch a cheeky takeover bid. Maybe he knows what's in results and intends to sell them back at a good profit (my prefered option but unlikely)The thing is he can cancel them whenever he feels, keeping them accessible gives him options.

That is how I see it ... short term , imho , the only consequence of SPD buying their own stock is to steady the share price.
I have no idea ...time will tell

Surely the whole idea of the buyback is to then cancel thus improving the fundamentals ?That's what's the normal thing to do is but as we we know MA is not exactly normal !!!

Let's say he had thoughts of buying the remainder of shares in issue surely he would have to buy the treasury shares but if he was to cancel them that would not be the case ? I can't believe he would be aloud to do this. Maybe this is why he hasn't cancelled them?If MA were to take it private would the premium on the treasury shares come back to shareholders as a final dividend before the big fella disappears to Monaco and out of the corporate spotlight ?

Prelims in 8 trading days time, be interesting to see if the share price breaks its weekly or monthly resistance (298 & 302 respectively) up to results, be keeping a close on it for trading wouldn't touch this as an investment though - boo hiss.
