SMDS is in play and has been since the last failed approach by Mondi. If it fails again, the company is on borrowed time as a standalone business. I am sure of it.

You might be right Moorsie2. My well run SMDS comment was based upon meeting a director of the business who I was very impressed with and she stated that the company was very well run and I believed her, with no doubt - 100%. The only caveat as to my comment is that this was some time ago, and things might have changed??

In any event, my general comment still stands regardless, as we have to assume that someone or some people on SMDS's board know what they're doing. This is not an unreasonable assumption for a ftse100 company.

Well run SMDS!?!

Their management has been a disaster these last 5 years for Total Shareholder returns compared to its competitors.

It went from the highest rating company in its sector to the lowest.

Time the board said enough is enough.

Get a bloody deal done is my view

I suspect it's the usual game at the current time and perhaps this is obvious. UK share prices are generally depressed, Mondi sees an opportunity.... They think say £4-4.50, will entice SMDS to bite and the well run SMDS's Directors think no way. The only issue is if SMDS feel vulnerable as a business going forward, as in their future profitability. If not and they have confidence going forward then Mondi, who have tried before, really, really have to put a knock out bid on the table. Who knows, but we'll find out tomorrow at the latest.

They cannot mention anything until the process is at an end or the time period has run out.

That is tomorrow....

Yeah why should they disclose negotiations before they are done with it?

No mention of the takeover in the trading statement this morning.

Yes, if no bid then I'd expect Mondi to rise and DS Smith to fall back to the 270 - 280 range.

And what will happen to the Mondi share price on a confirmed bid...?.

That may give an opportunity, as with SKG.

Mondi Plc has increased its preliminary takeover offer for rival DS Smith Plc as it seeks to create one of the world’s largest packaging companies, people with knowledge of the matter said.
Mondi improved its indicative all-stock proposal several days ago, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. DS Smith still sees that bid as inadequate, the people said.
London-listed DS Smith, which has a market value of about £4.5 billion ($5.7 billion), announced last month it had received an expression of interest from Mondi. Under UK takeover rules, Mondi has until March 7 to announce a firm bid or decide it’s walking away.
Deliberations are ongoing, and there’s no certainty they will result in a transaction. Representatives for Mondi and DS Smith declined to comment.
Packaging companies have been pursuing consolidation as they grapple with the slowdown in demand from online shoppers. A deal would create a leading European containerboard and box producer, worth more than £10 billion based on current market values.

I agree. I'm struggling to imagine a 400p offer. Would be a good result for me though. Given that Mondi already left SMDS stood up in the isle a couple of years ago, this time it needs to happen.

I would think some progress will be made one way or another this week with the SMDS Q3 update due on Wednesday along with the put up or shut up deadline on Thursday.

Ds Smith cannot allow that to happen. They need to find the win win sweet spot

Mondi could walk away like last time. No doubt SMDS would slip if that happens. Hope it doesn't.

I’m looking for 4 but hoping for more. I purchased shares in my isa in the 1990’s and added to them later. This is my largest investment I recall the first price I bought at was £1.39. others cost £2+ and £3. Id be unhappy starting with a 3 and would hope someone else would pitch in.

Myself, given recent share price history, I'd be very surprised if Mondi agree to anything starting with a 4. I would be very happy, but surprised.

I would like to see it go through as long as the nominal price starts with a 4...

Below that I would like them to seek out a white Knight elsewhere

ELSA - interested on your view. As a largish holder what is your wish, deal or no deal? Deal at what price would satisfy you?
