yes.

This is a solid profitable company in a growing market. Strange there seems so little interest in it amongst ADVFN users. My investment club bought years ago with the rationale "It is one of the last independent waste management companies and could be takeover target". Is this still true ?

Some graphs and news links in the header would make this a more interesting thread. If VMAX is not around, perhaps some one could start a new one.

I hold only as part of my investment club.

regards,GF.

yesterday's FT
quote
K waste disposal companies including Biffa and Shanks look set to benefit further from increased government spending on new incineration, recycling and waste treatment facilities.

New research by Catalyst Corporate Finance argues that the UK will have to invest £9bn in new incineration and treatment facilities in order to cut the amount of waste dumped in landfill to just 20 per cent by 2020, while also providing opportunities for energy generation from waste.
EDITOR'S CHOICE
Biffa set to recommend new offer - Dec-19
Biffa again rejects private equity offer - Dec-06
Shanks hit by slowing services demand - Nov-08

Leading Leading contenders to benefit from the spoils of waste disposal spending include Biffa and Shanks, the largest pure-play waste companies in the UK. Shares in both companies fluctuated in 2007 but are now broadly at the same level as last year. Shanks shares are back at about 230p after hitting a high of 280p in May and a low of 195p in November.

Biffa shares have also been boosted by a £1.23bn takeover approach made last month by Montagu and HG Capital. Biffa shares have recovered to 330p since the interest from Montagu and HG Capital was revealed. They fell as low as 220p in August. Biffa was demerged from Severn Trent in October 2006 at 265p.

The recommended offer is the latest of a number of examples of merger and acquisition activity in the sector. Last March, Montagu sold Cory Environmental to ABN Amro for £588m. In 2006, Spanish construction company FCC bought the Waste Recycling Group from Terra Firma for about £1.4bn, while France's Veolia bought Cleanaway.

Other rivals for the private finance initiatives include Pennon Group, which runs a waste management division, Viridor, and South West Water. Other privately held and overseas rivals such as Cory Environmental, FCC, Suez and Veolia also compete in the field, which has attracted increasing interest from private equity.

In the recent comprehensive spending review, the government earmarked £1.5bn in private funding initiative credits to help local authorities over the next three years. But Catalyst claims this will not be enough to meet the 2020 targets.

Currently, the UK sends 73 per cent of waste to landfill, incinerates 3m tonnes of waste a year and has the capacity to recycle or compost about 6.5m tonnes. In order to reduce the total sent to landfill to 20 per cent, Catalyst estimates the UK will need to incinerate 11.5m tonnes – which could mean an additional 50 incineration facilities – and recycle or compost 28m tonnes a year.

Announced today : my last off-topic post : anything else will be on the AMEC thread !

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - AMEC PLC said it has won a 36 mln stg contract to design and manage the expansion of a potash mine in Canada for fertilizer enterprise PotashCorp.

The project management and services company said it will provide engineering, procurement, construction management and project management (EPCM) services for the upgrade, which will cost PotashCorp a total of 430 mln stg to complete.

The upgrade of the Cory Potash Mine in Saskatchewan will increase the site's mining and hoisting capability, extend the mine's warehousing and loading facilities, increase production capacity by 1.2 mln stg to 2 mln and create a new facility to produce red potash.

AMEC said work would begin immediately and is expected to take 36 months to complete. marc.roca@thomson.com mr/dca

But I think RGY has significant potential upside in the short term if a contract win is announced.

Shanks man backs ReEnergy

Roger Hewitt, who built up Shanks from a £6 million waste services company into a FTSE 250 giant, plans to repeat the feat through his new endeavour ReEnergy. The company is in the process of raising £16 million ahead of an AIM flotation on 21 December.

Hewitt has assembled a range of novel waste-related technologies. Some of the new funds will enable the group to take majority stakes in some of these. For instance he envisages obtaining a 51 per cent share of Estech Europe. This group is behind a technology that creates an organic fibre from municipal waste that can be burnt in power stations.

Similarly ReEnergy has obtained a license from Pirelli to commercialise the Italian group's waste recycling techniques in the UK. Again, this converts waste into bricks with calorific content akin to coal. These can then be used in power stations. Tests are due to be carried out at Drax Power Station in Yorkshire next year.

ReEnergy is also focused on water treatment and has invested in Oases, a desalination system for use in relatively small-scale situations, such as hotels, leisure and small residential developments.

Joining Hewitt on the board are Brian Harcourt, who brought Ocean Power Technologies to AIM in October 2003, and non-executive director Howard Flight, a Conservative MP until earlier this year. Flight built up Guiness Flight before selling it to Investec Asset Management, where he remains a director.

Hewitt says the company is currently in negotiations with local authorities about contracts and envisages first revenues emerging in 2006. Cenkos is broker to ReEnergy and Strand Partners is nomad.

share sales.
The CEO is retiring and also had to exercise some options or lose them. The FD may hold no shares currently, but has lots of options. Check out the latest annual report and the detail of the options awarded after the balance sheet date. The RNS about share sales does not tell the whole story.
