I assume it is the unlisted investments that is causing SMT to perform worse than PCT and ATT at the moment . hoping nasdaq has just done a 50% retracement between breakpoint point and all time high

Two interesting articles in today's FT on pages 10 and 11.

1. Commentary on ScoMo's part-disposal of Tesla including that;

- ScoMo would consider further investing in Tesla in the event of a price setback and elsewhere, and

-that investors " have to be ready to pay "unreasonable" for high growth stocks because the scale of future returns can be dramatic....."

2. Fascinating article headed:- " Cash floods China start-ups in race for next Tesla" .

A MASSIVE reduction in ScoMo's holding of Tesla.

The JULY month-end fact-sheet showed that ScoMo had a 13.4% portfolio holding in Tesla . This would have augmented significantly to perhaps 15% ++ in August.

However , a recent SEC filing reveals that ScoMo has just cut its holding in Tesla to just 4.25%.

James Anderson cites, according to various press-reports, that in-house stock concentration guidelines forced the cut.

Personally, I find that somewhat confusing as several ScoMo stocks have portfolio holdings significantly greater than 4.25% - such as Amazon, Illumina, Tencent, Baba and which are all (at end-July) within the 5-10% range.

So why cut from 13.4%++ to 4.25% and not, for example to 8-10%??

The other question is what will they invest the proceeds in?

My strong personal recommendation to ScoMo would be to buy Zillow - destined in my view to become the global leader in digital real-estate services which is a market with exponential potential addressing probably the biggest - and as yet still horribly fragmented and antiquated - asset class in the world.

Reduction of TSLA holding is well warranted IMO given the meteoric rise on NASDAQ
Just gives SMT funds to invest elsewhere.
As stated previously one to hold long term regardless of ups and downs of Global stock markets.

also, not sure the NAV can be trusted as this trust owns unlisted shares . That might explain why it is not performing as well as ATT and PCT recently as nasdaq keeps reaching new all time highs .

The simple answer is the latter. But the two are related because if the underlying value rises, investors may be more inclined to buy,

Each day SMT issues an RNS with Net Asset Value. The RNS notes "Net Asset Values are calculated in accordance with published accounting policies and AIC guidelines". The NAV is effectively the value of the underlying investments.

So the share price of investment trust has either a premium or a discount to the underlying value. Over time this differential can change, so if you buy when the discount is high, and the discount closes, you get effectively more of an uplift in your holding.

SMT is currently trading around its NAV, though has been at a small premium for much of the last quarter. Conversely the Herald Investment Trust,HRI, which several posters here also hold, often trades at a discount of more than 15%

Excuse me if this is a stupid question, but with investment trusts quoted on the LSE, how is the current price determined ? Is it based on the value of the underlying investments, or is it just like ordinary shares whose price is based on market sentiment, i.e. the price investors are prepared to buy or sell at.

so reason is the drop in NAV on 31st august which was a bit surprising although nobody knows how they value the unlisted investments

Not only do we have TSLA in "Melt Up" situ, today we have holding ZM showing a 27% gain in Pre-Market Trading hours.

Should enhance the NAV

As always,
