Also risk attached. There is a premium for risk as well as forward interest rate curves. Coupon suspension or a wipeout is on the table again. As sadly we have already been reminded how government bonds can suddenly become illiquid and toxic in a matter of days or even hours where you have an irresponsible government sitting behind those bonds. The changes in laws post 2009 crises allows for both coupon suspension and bail in of prefs.

Hopefully the recent debacle will help wake a few idealists out there up who now may begin to realise its all very well supporting bizarre and fanciful political ideals, but these policies have a real cost to them.

Cousin Jack, Par could be relevant in the event that a company tried to redeem one

Thanks both. I was getting hung up on the par price but I can see that, as Sky says, it’s the yield that is key. Will re-evaluate on that basis.

CJ - its priced according to interest rates - being at par, a premium to par, or a discount to par is a total irrelevance. Currently a coincidence that the coupon rate is pretty much in line with the yields on most of the investable prefs. Just keep an eye on the yields of the Aviva prefs to know whether these are value or not.

Not really looks about right, I've bought some stab at par too.

Now under 100p so certainly an attractive income share. However I’m wondering why, unlike other insurance prefs, it’s trading around par - and whether that gives cause for concern.

Well, the bid on RSAB has been gently, ever so slowly, nibbling up over the recent past. Nice to see :-)

Why do we think the new buyer won’t let the dust settle and then return capital on the prefs?

Well, that hope that everyone would stampede for the exits and lower the price to somewhere juicy was clearly a bust!

Hah! Good on you... I suspect VTA the absentee. Would have strongly recommended last week, but the 10% rise over recent days makes them less of a screaming buy...
