Gecko I'd love to see these selfish idealists plonked on an island with no oil, and nothing that has oil used in it's creation or transportation. It would be Pol Pot's 'Year One' experiment all over again, except these clowns have voted for it. Further more bill them for the damage and losses their actions cause. It's fine to protest if that's your thing, but it's not ok to cause losses to others in pursuit of getting a message across.

Very civilised of everyone to call off their strikes while the Queens mourning/funeral is on. So not all selfish savages after all.

Will Liz Truss do something decisive about RMG, she does seem keen to get on and get things sorted with no mucking about, which is a breath of fresh air compared to her timorous fumbling predecessors.

isis, my point on it being a crazy statement is how can you sack managers / make them apply for their own jobs then expect them to battle the unions? This business has shown it's poorly run from the very top down and when other couriers were expanding locations they were closing depots!!

It needs gripping for sure but when it no longer knows what it is / what it want's / how to get there it's a massive task. Didn't PF or RMG employ a CEO from abroad who didn't travel to the UK at all hardly!!

Can't say it's crazy. The Postal side is a loss making business and needs reforming.
I only get about 5 letters a Week now if that. Nothing special in them.

My view is simple, both sides are at fault / miles apart from a sensible long term solution.

I have said it before and will say it again, management have never gripped the issue due to the constant change within them. No one wants to tackle a problem that will only result in short term pain / costs. Instead the can gets kicked down the road but now headwinds see it coming back towards the management.

It wasn't that long ago certain managers were applying for their own jobs and getting pushed out to save costs. I heard whispers then that this would shake up the union members as it would be them next. What a crazy thing to say that is!!

Royal Mail plc ("Royal Mail")

Communications Workers' Union (CWU) media comment

We are aware that in recent media interviews, Dave Ward, the General Secretary of the CWU has indicated that we are in "secret talks" with a private equity investment group, he believes, regarding a takeover of Royal Mail. The Company wishes to make clear that this is not true. We are involved in no such talks.

Gecko, if I were running a business that involved sending large numbers of packages, then RM would be my last port of call, even though I have seen behind the scenes many times, and behind the scenes of many other carriers. I have concluded with all the carriers I have done work for, and provided staff to, that when things go wrong (or missing) it happens right at the start of the chain before it gets into the trunking part of the journey.

These parcel carriers are simple businesses, and operationally things tend to wrong where there is penny pinching on the equipment needed to log, track, and stack packages.

I tend to avoid using Royal Mail as far as possible. Their Royal Mai l48 is one of the worst services I have seen offered (parcels coming to me using this always seem to have issues)

And the overpaid lazy gits are on strike, once again.

Gecko I still send some things by mail, perhaps 30 or 49 items per year, especially if of a 'sensitive' nature.

eg, I have had this returned several times as "undeliverable", which I construe as censorship.

Letter revenue was 3.7 billion quid last year so a very good business remains. They need to get rid of DSA then they can charge the necessary amount for delivering a letter that makes it profitable.

I agree that post these days is mainly junk mail.
I would say I get less than 10 letter a year that I actually need to receive, outside of cards for Christmas or birthdays etc. I think it must be those that keep the postman going, along with amazon etc!!

Lefrene

Does anyone post letters these days?
Most of it seems to be junk mail! Think of all those trees that cut down to send us junk mail.

Let the letters side go bust - no more junk mail, fewer trees cut down

Everyone's a winner!

Mail should be split off from the parcel operations, and left to sink or swim on it's own. It's always been politics getting in the way of what needs to be done. It's quite possible that mail could stand on it's own feet as a business, but not with the highly wasteful universal daily delivery model.

If they split it up its still the same group unless they sell the good company and the money goes into the bad company.

"the board will gladly split up the group into good company and bad company if this isn't resolved to their satisfaction" - you think HMG will allow that to happen and then be left on the hook to ultimately re-nationalise a total basket case?

"they cannot expect a subsidy from GLS." - which is exactly what the Govt. might make Royal Mail do by forbidding a sale of GLS.

Took a few days away but come back to see the little bounce a few days back quickly turned into a drop as has happened many times here now.
Really poor performance by management over many years has lead to this. Easy to blame the staff that are taking IA right now but this problem is far bigger than that.
