A former senior Treasury mandarin has warned Labour against using the taxpayer stake in Royal Bank of Scotland to direct lending to the British economy.

Nick Macpherson, who helped bail out RBS as Gordon Brown’s top Treasury official during the financial crisis a decade ago, said current Labour party plans for the bank made him worried, while warning nationalisation was “corrosive” for banks and taxpayers.

“It won’t end well,” he said of a Labour policy suggestion that would mandate RBS to lend to small businesses using government funds. “If you want to implement socialism, I don’t think nationalisation is necessarily the best way to do it.

I would say more of a UK focus, but Lloy didn't fare so badly. Not sure why RBS was particularly battered

They have to blame something, Corby's as good a reason as any.

The fly in the ointment with Treeza's deal is the open ended agreements that can only be cancelled with the other sides permission .. that's plain bonkers imo.

GCOM everybody thinks they can do better.People only have a view on one or 2 aspects, putting the whole thing together is always going to frustrate at least 50% of people.A truly impossible task. Like most people who voted remain knew. I reckon at least 2-3 million votes were swayed with the 350 million per week more for the NHS campaign.

Not surprising, really. I was on holiday in Malta during the referendum and was staggered by the number of ex-pats who were voting Leave due to "immigration". They'll have all been crying into their 1€ cans of lager the morning after when sterling dropped the best part of 20%.

Not only that, but they can look forward to having their pensions frozen at the current rate when we leave the EU, as it is for most other countries. Almost worth the price of a holiday to go out and have a good laugh at these "we knew exactly what we were voting for" merchants.

edit: when I asked them what would happen to them if the result was leave, the answer I got was "we're alright, because our prime minister has told us that whatever happens, those here already can stay". When asked "well what about anyone else who wants to come out here?" answer came there none.

largeronald, what I think is interesting is the number of Ministers resigning, including Raab, with at least one parent who was an immigrant to the UK, but are anxious to close the borders to others.

Charlie Elphicke is pro Brexit and seems to be pretty vocal on the issue, so Dover's interests are well represented.

Conservative and prominent leave campaigner, Dominic Raab, is the MP for the borough which had the highest remain vote in Surrey in the EU referendum.

Really fed up with this all now.TM getting all the blame, but she has an impossible task.Even one Labour Mp quoted as saying you could have the most competent government and the most competent PM they would not be able to deliver Brexit in the terms that it was sold.

What all the gammons have to remember, is that if not for the traitors to democracy and enemies of the people, this deal would be it - they wouldn't even be getting a say in it.

Given the number of MPs banging on about UK fishing, I thought I would check how many were employed in fishing in the UK.

According to the Govt the number is around 11,700 approximately 2,000 were part-time.
