14/9/2017 07:40 | A speech by Theresa May billed as an important moment in the Brexit negotiation process is to take place in Florence next week, Downing Street has announced. May will speak in the historic Italian city on Friday 22 September “to update on Brexit negotiations so far”, the prime minister’s spokesman said. “She will underline the government’s wish for a deep and special partnership with the European Union once the UK leaves the EU,” he said. News of the planned address emerged just over a week ago when Guy Verhofstadt, the European parliament’s Brexit coordinator, said the next round of UK-EU talks on the subject would most likely be delayed as May planned to make an “important intervention” on the issue. | leedskier

13/9/2017 16:48 | The Democratic Unionist party is planning to vote with Labour in favour of raising NHS pay and against higher tuition fees during opposition day debates, the Guardian has learned. The party’s MPs will back Labour on a “fair pay rise” for NHS workers and oppose the government’s increase in tuition fees – the first time the DUP will have broken with the Conservatives since their deal after the election. A DUP source confirmed that the party’s position was to vote on Wednesday for two opposition day motions tabled by Labour. The votes are believed to be non-binding and therefore fall outside the DUP’s confidence and supply agreement with Theresa May’s party. | leedskier

13/9/2017 15:03 | I had not seen your post maxk when I posted this. "Snap". Even remainers will be having second thoughts about the wisdom of EU membership! Jean-Claude Juncker today called for an ever-more powerful European Union and warned Britain would "regret" Brexit, in a defiant speech that demanded the bloc's enlargement to the east and the adoption of the euro by every EU country. “The European landscape would be clearer and more understandable if the European ship was steered by a single captain,” --- If the EU is seeking enlargement "to the East" he must have in mind membership for The Ukraine. Putin will be delighted to read that The Ukraine is a candidate to become a member of the EU & NATO. | leedskier

13/9/2017 10:04 | Something is not right with the British economy! Granted higher prices may in part reflect the weaker £ and higher import costs, but oil has never been as cheap as it has been for the last two or three years. I guess that the Government imposed austerity on public services and public sector pay may be impacting and worse still encouraging private sector employers to follow suit. Given the importance to the British economy of the service sector and retail sales, Theresa May and Philip Hammond need to rethink this policy if public unrest is not to boil over. | leedskier
