I'm not sure about that odd looking fellow bringing up the rear, though.

I imagine that it is easier for all those US Investment Banks in Canary Wharf to short London shares.

A pity the markets aren't so predictable; although maybe they are.

Today's shocker.Over 12 months the CAC40 has gained 18%, the DAX 16% and the FTSE100 less than 1%.

I'm sure the Daily Mail photographers would rather be out snapping scantily clad ladies sunbathing in Regents Park.

Yes, but that was the good ol days, when downtown Tokyo was worth more than the entire continental United States...on paper anyway.

Indeed.

I was reading that the Japanese have been encouraged to buy overseas.

Back in the good old days the Japanese were buying-up the USA.

If you recall the 1993 Sean Connery film 'Rising Sun'.

I note that you noted that the Japs had out bid the Germans for the FT, leedskier.

Looks like we'll have to wait for the yanks to decide to change direction before the UK will even be brave enough to come out of hiding.

The FTSE 100 is expected to open around 20 points lower this morning as falling commodity prices weigh on investors' confidence.

Spot gold is approaching its lowest level for five years at $1,086.04 an ounce, although Brent crude oil rebounded yesterday after hitting its lowest price since April earlier this week.

Today's anticipated slow start comes after the FTSE closed 12 points lower on Thursday.

Also affecting investors' confidence is disappointing manufacturing data from China which sent Asian stocks crashing last night. The Nikkei 225 shed 133 points, the Hang Seng shed 233 points while the Australian dollar fell below $73c for the first time in six years.

China's PMI?

US Interest Rate rises, or even the dim prospect of?

The self fulfilling prophesy of falling commodity prices, which are being shorted below the price which even the largest companies cannot economically supply at?

So Japan buys the Ft and pays a lot for it. The sale does not include the building of even the Ft's 50% ownership of the Economist.

QE in Japan is said to be encouraging M&A overseas.
