Writing to your m.p. helps. Getting a response though is far from assured.

If there is sufficient no of people write to their local MP this would certainly create some pressure to support UK company which would ensure more local jobs are generated with profits staying in the country

Anyone who lobbies for foreign companies's tenders in strategic sectors such as energy , should never ever be allowed near the government. It is sad that how lax our country is to this. Yanks do right that even cut of Huawei from 5g. SMR is even more important to entrust to overseas entities.

No matter how friendly a country- Something as important as energy and nuclear at that, should never be open to a bid from a foreign company. Countries that do this are either vassals or incapable of producing their own gear.

Great news yesterday re SMR's

Rolls-Royce on Thursday welcomed news that the Czech Republic and the Czech state utility, CEZ Group, has named Rolls-Royce SMR as their preferred supplier for the development and construction of small modular reactors. In a statement on Wednesday, the Czech government said that the project would "help modernise the Czech energy industry and open up new opportunities for the domestic industry". It said it expected local companies to play a significant role as Rolls-Royce was "just forming its supply chain". Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive, Chris Cholerton, said he welcomed the news. "This decision, to select Rolls-Royce SMR from a list of seven potential SMR technology providers, follows a rigorous evaluation process by CEZ Group. Discussions are ongoing to finalise contract terms and the final agreements are subject to customary regulatory clearances. Details of the agreement will be published at signing."

Hmm, beginning to think Starmer and Ed have had a bit more than a few football tickets and dresses for the missus!! How can a company plan something like that without being tipped off, where as RR had halted operations as decisions were not being made... the mind boggles. Thankfully Tufan just gets on with the Job.

Totally agree, this govt has the duty to support British industry and manufacturing.. everyone else protects their own,. only the Brits play by the rules and look what's happened to our manufacturing sector and export markets over last 30-40 years... then look at Germany for example!

Holtec and RR in S Yorks

South Yorkshire has been chosen as the home for an American company's factory making nuclear reactors.

Holtec, the world's largest exporter of capital nuclear components, said it planned to build small modular reactors (SMRs) at the factory to serve the UK, European and Middle East markets.

Pre 2016 certain rules were in force in respect of tendering for public contracts. Favour could not be seen to be given to 'local' providers.

Now, however, we have complete freedom and we are not constrained by EU rules - only the WHO rules. That said, France and Germany have for years flouted some of these restrictions, or so I believe, and I cannot blame them as both the US and China can often be both protective and supportive of their own industries at the cost of other countries becoming uncompetitive.

We should stop playing 'cricket' and grow a pair. It's a tough world out there.

I have never understood certain aspects of the UK policy making both centrally and locally. For example, bus manufacturer in Falkirk, Alexander Dennis, makes a really good efficient product. It is struggling because they are expensive to make where their competitors produce them at a lower cost using cheaper labour. The costs of labour here is somewhat implemented by government/local policy built up from minimum/working wage rates. The officials in the area are crying over the impact it will have if the company goes under, but I should point out that the local authority doesn't buy it's own buses from the company. This leads to a situation where to save a few dollars on the cost of the buses seems to be the best decision even weighed up against both the tax revenues and health/wealth of the local economy. Sometimes things are greater than the sum of the parts and the rewards from the extended activities that these industries create is often overlooked. Not to sure why we can't have a much bigger Buy British Attitude, when I go to France, all I see is Peaugot/Citreon, Germany VAG/BMW etc we need to be protective of our key brands... everyone else blatantly are.

Rolls-Royce shares hit record as Miliband is urged to approve mini nuclear power stations in BritainUpdated 22:03, 19 Sep 2024By Jessica ClarkRolls-Royce shares hit a record high yesterday as pressure mounted on Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to approve UK mini nuclear power stations. The British engineering giant's stock rose 5 per cent to 525p – taking gains since Tufan Erginbilgic became chief executive at the start of 2023 to 462 per cent – after it won a landmark contract in The Czech Republic. The deal sparked calls for the mini-nukes – known as small modular reactors (SMRs) – to get the green light in the UK.Experts said Ministers must show 'greater urgency' for Britain to win the global race to roll out SMRs. They are seen as critical in the push to net-zero. SMRs are cheaper and faster to construct than full-sized nuclear power stations.Shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho said: 'Labour's go-slow approach on nuclear will take us back to square one.'That's bad for bills and our energy independence.'Rolls-Royce is one of five companies left in the running to be chosen for Government contracts by Great British Nuclear. The others still in contention are US-Japanese joint venture GE-Hitachi and American firms Holtec, NuScale Power and Westinghouse. A winner is expected by the end of the year with the final investment decision set to be made by 2029.Tom Greatrex, head of the Nuclear Industry Association, said the Government must 'get on with choosing the technologies, sites and number of units'.He added: 'Greater urgency than Ministers have thus far signalled is needed. The longer they take, the longer the country will be exposed to volatile international gas markets driving energy costs up, undermining the health of the economy.'

Could it be that RR sold its marine business to clear the decks and raise capital for the SMR business?
If so it must have a a strong indication that they will soon get an order.
The naval business has been a steady earner over many decades.

Trying to read the tealeaves, but the possible cancellation of the large nuclear station in Wales could also be taken positively.

Interesting times, todays market cap of over £40bn is amazing.
