Rolls-Royce SMR is first ever UK reactor design to be submitted for considerationEvaluation of potential benefits and detriments is required for in-principle justification of any new nuclear practiceThe Nuclear Industry Association has applied for a justification decision for Rolls-Royce SMR's reactor design. Our application makes the case that the benefits of clean, firm, flexible power from the reactor would far outweigh any potential risks, which are in any event rigorously controlled by robust safety features, including passive safety systems, built into the design, in line with the UK's regulatory requirements. The application also demonstrates that the reactor design would support nuclear energy's contribution to a stable and well-balanced electricity grid, which is essential to reduce consumer bills and maintain economic competitiveness.Justification is a regulatory process which requires a Government decision before any new class or type of practice involving ionising radiation can be introduced in the UK. A justification decision is one of the required steps for the operation of a new nuclear technology in the UK, but it is not a permit or licence that allows a specific project to go ahead. Instead, it is a generic decision based on a high-level evaluation of the potential benefits and detriments of the proposed new nuclear practice as a pre-cursor to future regulatory processes. This is the first ever application for justification of a UK reactor design. The UK Government has confirmed that the application has been accepted for consideration, and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs will support the Secretary of State in their role as the justifying authority responsible for the justification decision.Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:"Rolls-Royce SMR's design, like other SMRs, offer huge possibilities for the UK to revive our industrial capabilities and deliver low-carbon energy for net zero and energy security. We are delighted to support this step to get the design approved in its home country."It is essential that our nuclear renaissance is made in Britain, so the new Government should ensure that we deploy enough SMR designs to justify investment in the UK supply chain to deliver them."Helena Perry, Rolls-Royce SMR's Safety and Regulatory Affairs Director, said:"As the UK's most advanced SMR design, today's submission for regulatory justification is another important step to ensure that we can continue to move at pace towards deployment in the UK."Each Rolls-Royce SMR 'factory-built' nuclear power plant will provide enough clean, affordable, electricity to power a million homes for 60+ years - delivering energy security, enabling net zero and making a transformational contribution to the UK economy."Rolls-Royce SMR remains on track to complete Step 2 of the Generic Design Assessment by the nuclear industry's independent regulators and move immediately into the third and final step this summer."

Rolls-Royce is cashing in on the surge in popularity of fast fashion brands such as Shein as it expands its presence in the air cargo market.

Demand for air freight capacity is soaring as shoppers increasingly want clothes and other goods delivered from overseas within days rather than weeks.

That is creating more business for engine maker Rolls-Royce – which has traditionally been more associated with passenger jets or military aeroplanes.

Ewen McDonald, the company's chief customer officer for civil aerospace, said the 'really strong market' was expected to accelerate. He added: 'We're looking at it doubling in the next 20 years.'

He said there would be demand for 500 large aircraft over that period.

'We're really quite fortunate that we're moving into this at the right time,' he said.

Rolls-Royce to Upgrade Jet Engines After Withering Criticism

(Bloomberg) -- Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc is investing more than £1 billion ($1.3 billion) to upgrade the engines that power large commercial aircraft, seeking to improve their performance and durability after drawing criticism from a key customer.

The UK engine maker is working on stage-wise improvements that lift the durability of the XWB engine powering the Airbus SE A350-1000 jet. The upgrades are targeted particularly at sandy and hot climates such as the Middle East so that engines need less frequent servicing, according to Simon Burr, the company’s group director of engineering, technology and safety.

Rolls-Royce is also working to upgrade the version of the XWB engine that sits on the smaller A350-900 in order to eke out 1% more fuel efficiency, Burr said. The Trent 7000 model will receive enhancements to achieve greater reliability on the smaller A330neo model, he said.

Rolls-Royce is the only engine of choice on the Airbus A350 and A330neo models, and it also offers a powerplant for the Boeing Co. 787 Dreamliner. The engine on the larger A350, in particular, drew the ire of Emirates President Tim Clark last year, who lambasted the model as “defective” because of its higher-than-usual maintenance cycles, leading him to deny Airbus a major order for the plane.

Under Chief Executive Tufan Erginbilgic, Rolls-Royce has unwound unprofitable engine contracts, which has occasionally put its relationship with Airbus under strain. Investors, on the other hand, have applauded his greater fiscal discipline, sending the shares up almost 50% this year following a record performance in 2023.

Reliability is particularly important for carriers in the Middle East, who run their aircraft in hot and demanding conditions, putting more strain on their planes.

As part of the three stage program, Rolls-Royce will add more sand-resistant coatings to parts of the XWB-97 engine this year and modify certain components that will enter into service in 2028, the company said in a briefing ahead of the Farnborough Air Show that starts on Monday. The modified components will reduce engine temperatures but have the same overall shape, allowing them to be retrofitted into older models.

Burr said the company is also incorporating technologies, including using new proprietary alloys that it developed for its next-generation Ultrafan engine, on components for the XWB turbine, which Rolls-Royce says will improve so-called time on wing. That metric determines how long an engine can fly between maintenance cycles.

Ewen McDonald the Chief Customer Officer for RR's Civil Aerospace division, is not holding back here; this could materially impact the results, in a very positive way. RR are clearly raking in the money on the back of air cargo. . . .https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-13652627/Rolls-Royce-cashing-Shein-boom-air-cargo-market.Source: The Daily Mail 20th July 2024

Here is the text, note commitment to timetable set by Tories, i.e., selection of supplier(s) for first two two fleets 100 days post election, ie Oct 11th give or take.Edward Miliband Sharethis specific contributionI definitely concur with what my hon. Friend says about ITM Power-an incredibly impressive company that I have visited. I also concur with him on the SMR programme. Our manifesto made it clear that we support new nuclear, including at Sizewell, and we also support the SMR programme. Part of our challenge is to examine the legacy left to us by the last Government, but he should be in no doubt about my absolute support for the SMR programme. It is important, and we will strive to keep to the timetable set out.
