Falklands would rather 'starve' than give up land as politician attacks 'crazy' ArgentinaGavin Short, a member of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, said Argentina's sovereignty claims "mean absolutely nothing and will change nothing" on the archipelago.By John Varga - Thu, Oct 24, 2024A Falkland Islands' politician has dismissed Argentine claims to sovereignty over the British Overseas Territory (BOT) as "old rubbish" and just a lot of "hot air".He also said the Falklanders would rather "starve" than give their country away, insisting the islanders alone will decide what happens to their territory.In recent weeks, aggressive rhetoric from Buenos Aires has been ratcheting up towards the Falklands.Argentina's General Confederation of Labour Union accused the UK earlier this month of acting in an "illegal" and "aggressive" manner with regard to the British overseas Territory.The Peronist-led union claimed historical and legal precedents confirmed Argentina's sovereignty over the islands "without any doubt or hesitation".Gavin Short, a member of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, told the Express that Argentina's territorial claims "mean absolutely nothing and will change nothing" to the archipelago.He said that despite the huge economic and political pressure that Buenos Aires has tried to apply on the islands, the Falklanders would never consent to become Argentinian."You know, they're not silly. They know if they can wreck our economy, they can do us real damage," he explained."And they have funny little minds. They think if our lifestyle over here takes a nosedive, we'll all suddenly want to be Argentine."They're crazy. Nothing could be further from the truth. We'd rather starve than give our country away. But that's the way they think. And as I say, despite all that though, the Falklands has grown and is growing steadily still."The islands' economy is currently booming and boasts a world-leading fishery industry that brings in around £31 million a year.At the same time, the islanders are set to earn billions of pounds from the Sea Lion basin that potentially contains 800 million barrels of oil.Yet the Falklands cost the British taxpayer over £60 million per year, leading some to question whether it's worth the price.Mr Short rejected the suggestion that the Falklands are a drag on the UK's finances, arguing that, on the contrary, the islands contribute their fair share to Britain's GDP."Where do you think we invest our money?, he said. "Where do you think the majority of our imports come from?"Believe it or not, we spend our money with the UK, the vast amount of it. We're buying goods and services from the United Kingdom."And why do we do that? It's because we know the system, we know the quality and it suits us down to the ground."British companies also stand to benefit from the proposed plans to drill for oil. Teslyn Barkman, another member of the Falklands' Legislative Assembly, told the Express that around £750 million would go directly to British companies during the first two phases of development.The issue of identity in the Falklands is a complex one, given changing demographics and the passage of time. So do the Falklanders still see themselves as British?As far as he's concerned, Mr Short sees his identity inextricably linked to the UK and remains a firm British loyalist, although he admits things are changing.
